Look at cycling. Loads of events at different distances, indoor, outdoor, time trials, road races, cross-country.
I think they should add XC and/or Ekiden to the WC or Olympics. Then dropping the 10000 would be OK. Then you still get more distance runners a chamce to race in a more dramatic race, The Olympic marathon is iconic. The WC does not need a marathon because of WMM. An Ekiden would be better.

2017: 5000 metre with pacer (regular one is often too slow)
2019: 25 metre (guessing the gun is crucial)
2020: double hop (like triple jump with 2 jumps)
2021: phone throw (good way to get rid of old phones)
2023: backwards 100 metre (this should have been implemented 100 years ago)
2024: blindfolded hammer with no safety net (would add a lot of excitement)
2025: horizontal polevault
2027: redesigned javelin so it can fly out of the stadium
2028: backward blindfolded onelegged high jump
By 2100 there could be hundreds of events. At some point they'll also have to build bigger fields and add at least a dozen more lanes to the track.
At this rate the world record will never be broken in our lifetimes and neither will national records. Almost all the fastest 10,000m times recorded are from over 10 years ago

Yes, but track distance runners have to run something right? I think the 10k XC will be great for our sport. Whenever my friends from school (not on the team) come watch a cross country race, they always have a blast and will come to most of the races. Track on the other hand.... Only interest is watching the steeple.
