Coaches lying while recruiting

You know what, I did have a college coach lie to me. I had completely forgotten about it. He is a mid-major Division I coach who told me a couple weeks before signing that he had 2 of the 3 fastest 1600 kids in the state committed to sign and he wanted me on board. I don't know if he thought we were stupid? We were in constant contact with each other and all ended up signing to his major competition together. Two of us took mostly academic and a smaller stipend so the other could have an athletic.

This is the same coach who came up to me at the state cross country meet and said, "Hey, your are from *****? Is ***** ***** here today? I told him he was speaking to him and then turned away and started my warm up jog. It was pretty funny because he had seen me race quite a few times and never approached me.

They just sugar coat their program and promise things that they cannot give you.

I speak from experience

The bigger/higher caliber to even middle of the road D1 programs were more honest with me during the recruiting process.

Lower level schools were the least honest with me during the recruiting process and tried to do a lot of sugar coating and selling of their school.

I ended up settling on a mid-major D1 program with a coach I knew very well, and had gotten to know over the years (it was a local school). Ultimately playing a D1 sport is not exactly what you'd expect it to be as a high schooler looking from the outside in, regardless of how honest a coach is.

This is why another coach wanted to fight the coach in question at Indoor Heps a few years back.

When I coached, I want a kid to go where they fit best.

Its awful to see a kid get on campus and then realize he made a mistake. And it is heart breaking to seek a kid transfer more than once.

One coach I have a lot of respect for that was recruiting me back in the day, was a small college coach that I was interested in, and he asked what types of things I was interested in majoring in, and when he realized the area was not offered by his school, he quickly ended the recruitment and suggested some rival schools that did have the major.

Lot of respect for that guy.

Being a D1 athlete is not all sunshine and rainbows. Like anything in life, there are perks and drawbacks. There is a lot of pressure to perform. There are harsh consequences if you do not perform. It seems freshmen do not always realize this coming in.
