Assuming you are both fairly young, I think you are pushing your friend a little hard. Someone is going to get injured or discouraged. Take a longer view. It takes years, some say up to 10 years for a competitive runner to reach their max potential. Relax! Three hard days out of six is crazy for a beginner. Try one hard day of repeat 400 on track. Not all out. Maybe one tempo run during the week. Time trial every other week. Get out on trails. Have some fun. Most of your running should be easy conversational pace. The fitness will come. Patience is the best friend of distance runners.

You guys are not old. I am 64. Didn't start running until I was 29. I have been running longer than you have been alive. There are runners who win open championships in their 40's. And there are age group competitions at all distances, masters track races for age groups every 5 years into your 70's and beyond. I also coached for 12 years. The key is to stay motivated and stay healthy. Don't try to do too much too soon. Good luck to you both.

If he eats as crappy as the OP says, at a minimum the guy is likely to be 20lbs over race weight, and that is likely generous. Going to race lean alone would give him 30-40 s/mile, which brings that mile down to mid 5:30s. That's the enough speed for 19:00. And that is with NO improvement from training. Add in that and he is certainly capable of running in the 18s, probably by the spring if he trained smart AND dropped the weight.
How much faster than that we can't really say, given how varied peoples response to training stimuli are. Some people improve massively, others improve marginally.
As to your friends talent, all we can say at this point is that he is definitely in the upper half, maybe upper quarter, but again that depends on weight. If he is 100lbs overweight then he could have some SERIOUS talent. If he is truly race lean, then I'd say he might have right around average talent.
The other thing that would be good to know for evaluating his talent would be how much speed he has for 400. If the guy can go crank out something under 55s that really changes the game. As does only being able to do 60s+.
The OP has poor judgement. He thinks that beer and burgers are super unhealthy. His friend likely eats just fine. The OP considers anything other than broccoli and lettuce to be unhealthy. In actuality, burgers and alcohol are better for running than broccoli and lettuce.
