I hope Coach Monday has learned from her mistakes in coaching Maggie Vessey. The 800 is a very tough event to coach because there so many different ways to train someone for it.

Maggie Vessey is probably one of the biggest head cases ever. I'll never forget the time she went out in 65, 6 or 7 seconds behind the field, kicked it home and finished in 2:06/07 totally oblivious to what her competitors where doing. That was funny

Maybe not sweet, but factual about ole Maggie. Santa Cruz women are always a crapshoot, trust me..as someone who went thru a talented but ultimately unpredictable Santa Cruz Tri woman. Strange vibe on the north end of Monterey Bay for sure, although surfing and Hawaiian friends swear by Santa Cruz. Jon and Blake Russell among many others have a much better deal down on the opposite end of the Bay in PG.

The great hush hush amongst the staff at Oregon is that Laura has been coached by Monday most of the last 2 years after things were not great in her first 2 years.

Don't blame Monday for Vecsey. Maggie is a Cali girl who was fish out of water in Texas on several levels and trying to make it work Monday had Maggie staying at her house.

Robert Johnson, and more recently, Curtis Taylor, have been Roesler's coaches. After one year of adapting to the Div 1 college scene, it has been a consistent 3-year trend that culminated in Roesler's NCAA and USATF success.

Let's give credit where credit is due and knock off that Rose Monday nonsense.

I guess it is not impossibe, but I would be very surprised. AlSal never wanted a large group and a 400/800 type requires more individual attention than a true middle distance or long distance runner. Say what you want about AlSal, but he actually developes his own training plans, supervises all of the workouts and goes to just about every meet his athletes compete in. With that said, I am more 50% sure Alexa will end up with AlSal and that's becasue he's going to lose 1 or 2 female athletes in the next 2 years and he is going to need a training partner for Cain.

Just a guess.. but maybe Roesler's contract negotiations are in part taking a while because she knows she wants to be coached by Monday and maybe Nike would rather have her at OTC?

taking a while? No one is signed yet except for DAGS and clearly there was an arrangement reached earlier on that. They just finished NCAAs everyone got an agent now they agent listens to offers. She is ahead of the curve because she doesnt have to wait to race to try and earn more money becuase she ran 1:59

I have answered this on like 6 different threads (4 of which having nothing to specifically with Tara)

She was injured throughout the winter months from training and missed all of indoor season

She is doing training right now in Flagstaff Arizona at altitude developing her base right now, and won't compete in Europe this summer

I'm not sure what her race plans are up until next indoor season if anything, and if I were to guess Salazar probabaly has some road races planned out for her this fall

She caught a good break in that 10k last year at USA's, cause she really can't run a fast 5k, and she's barely good enough to be somewhat competitive in the 10k

Salazar said he picks runners who he thinks can medal at World Championships, Olympics, or finish top 3 at events like Boston Marathon, NYC Half, and she's obviously not going to do this at 10k so I would expect her to make her half marathon debut this fall and get into road racing, it's certainly her best bet

yeah, "taking a while". Roesler acknowledged as much in interviews. she said people expected her to sign immediately after ncaas but she was taking extra time with negotiations.

so perhaps i was right.. she knew she wanted Rose Monday. either Nike's not a sure thing and/or they are still negotiating with her because they want to pay her less if she doesn't go to their coaches.

Rose Monday was an adviser/coach to Laura when Laura was in high school.

Their connection goes back a good amount of time.

A Duck: thanks, that clarifies a lot, and should assuage those of us who have had some reservations about Roesler's decision to go with Monday.

Is there anything you can elaborate about the kind of connection they had while Roesler was in college--specifically about what sort of continuity between college and pro training that this coaching decision might afford? While Vessey's performance under Monday has made me skeptical, admittedly, Monday is also not someone I know too much about--though I am aware she's been around and generally involved in the professional track and field world for some time.

She might have had some success with Regina Jacobs. At the 2000 Oly Trials, Jacobs' mother kept trying to sit on my feet in the aisle in front of Row 1, near the finish line. I heard her tell someone else that Regina had been working some with Rose Monday.But maybe Rose didn't know about the BALCO products that Jacobs was taking.
