endurance monsters...yes...are they runners...I question that?....are fast walkers athletes...endurance monsters...possibly...great athletes...I guestion that....

when does endurancing racing come to and end?......100 miles..150 miles?....200 miles?....300 miles?....500 miles....????

please go back to the track...and escept the those distances that are being the excepted as distance races for competition as legitimate...all the rest are avoiding true competition!!!!!!!!!!!

It's debatable. Like others have said, he'd need time to train with some specificity - 20,000ft of downhill running is brutal. If he makes it through all the training, I'd say he crushes current fields. That being said, today's WS100 field is a lot different than it looked even 5 years ago. Rob Krar and Max King are both track guys, and they did great. Mike AIsh is an Olympian, and he just can't seem to figure out the 100 mile distance, he's done 2 Leadville 100s, didn't nail either, and he is struggling today. So, being a great track runner is no guarantee. Personally, I kinda think Rupp is a pu$$y (there are trees in the woods, is he going to be ok with the sniffles?). Physically, he could hang. Mentally, he's been babied along too much to deal with the shit that comes with running for 15 hours straight. You've gotta look at cramps/little strains/puking as obstacles to overcome, not something to pull out the race for.

I think asking how Galen Rupp, specifically, would do at Western States is kind of pointless. As a long-time occasional particpant and observer of ultras, my feeling is that, as someone said earlier, if you got all the E Africans to train for WS100 and gave them huge financial incentive, of course they'd crush it. And I guess Galen Rupp is as fast as pretty much any East African. But on the other hand, I think the casualty rate would be huge. It would be like the London Marathon when the pacemakers run too fast, except exponentially worse. Whoever won would be amazing, but it would probably be more like some little-known 2:10 marathoner or 27:30 10k guy. You might as well ask the question, how would Chris Derrick do at Western States?

what is limit? A one week race, 500 mile race....who can live the longest without sleeping race?...when does it all end?

Yeah, once a guy got lapped 4 times in a 100 mile track race (~1 time per 26.2) and he came back FOR THE WIN!

WS has been held for 40 years. It attracts runners from all over the world. How many road races in the U.S. have that kind of tradition?

Anyone is welcome to crush the ultra guys at 100 miles. Max King, a 2:15 guy, tried and came in 4th.

He couldn't do it this year, but at least he lined up.

Trying to predict how an elite 10k specialist would fare at 100miles is like trying to predict how an elite 800m specialist would fare at 10k. With some specific training they have a good chance at competing well, but it's such a big difference that predicting they would dominate the event is silly.

Aish did podium at leadville 100 and you had seasoned ultra runners blowing up themselves even earlier so being slower doesn't guarantee anything either. It should be clear now a track background does not specifically hamper you as a former track guy has won the biggest ultra trail running event in north america and another one led for close to 3/4 of it. Let that sink in. I'm not sure what the excuse will be now maybe unless you are grunting up a 45 degree angle with hands on your knees and never actually running for 150 miles, only then can you call yourself a "real" ultra runner.

I was thinking of starting another thread. "How would Galen Rupp do in the Western States 100."

Is that just stupid (like you guys think there is no chance he could win it) or is it debatable?

Here's my opinion, from personal experience. I don't do a lot of ultras anymore, but what I've found in longer trail races is that I gain a lot more benefit in performance by just doing hard marathon-type workouts than by training specifically on trails. I have yet to test this theory on trails, but I've found that even with ridiculous mileage and ultra-specific long runs (as much as 164 miles in 6 days), my 100 mile times don't improve much. The last couple trail races I've done have been by far my best, and have come after ditching the trails in training and just focusing on grinding tempo and marathon pace workouts. I get a lot of fitness and toughness out of these workouts and I think it translates well.

Looking at people faster than me, let's think about a couple elites that have excelled in both the regular running world and the ultra world.

1. Sage Canaday jumped into ultras and immediately started destroyed one of the most highly regarded records in trail racing (White River 50). With a lot of ultra experience, Sage is arguably not racing any better in ultras (he's only had 1 or 2 races on par with that WR50 win), so I'm not sure that Galen would really need time to "get used to" ultras. Nothing against Sage, who is a great runner, but Galen is out of the stratosphere compared to Sage in every measurable quantity.

2. Matt Carpenter. When he raced Leadville for the first time, he did more typical ultra stuff in his build-up and just exploded in the race. Second time around, he followed his instincts and never went more than 2 hours in training. What was the result? Arguably the single greatest 100 mile trail performance of all time. Really tough guys can perform extraordinarily well without doing Krupicka-esque 10 hour training runs.

There are some really tough and fit guys out in the ultra world, but Galen is at another level. You don't get to 26:44 without being the type of person that absolutely does not crack. This mentality is what it takes to win WS100. My ultimate opinion? He's running as much mileage as the guys winning, doing workouts so grueling that very few people in the world could even fathom the pain he puts himself through, and spending an incredible amount of time getting his mechanics to the point of perfection, so he's going to have just as good of endurance, far better speed, and a body that won't break down with a lot of mileage. I think with a couple months to train, he will win by a very comfortable margin. Maybe something will go wrong the first time out, causing a DNF, but by try two, at the very latest, nobody could touch him. Rupp is in a different universe.

Funny thing I remember from his first time at WS100 is that he reported having run a hilly 20 miler in San Fran at 6-flat pace just a couple days before the race as part of his "taper", so he actually is quite fast. Kilian is one of the fittest people on the planet and could've run WS100 a lot faster than he did. The first year, he lost because he didn't carry a water bottle and got ridiculously dehydrated (he had no former experience in heat). The next year, he was properly prepared and capable of far faster than what he ran. If you look at his race history, he usually wins by just a few minutes. He makes sure to have enough buffer to ensure victory, and that's it. In a lot of his trail races, when there's still a lot of distance left, he apparently will frequently gap his competitors, and then just slow down and wait for them to catch up because he's bored of running too far ahead by himself. If he was racing in 2012, he would've run a 14:42 or 14:43 compared to Olson's 14:46. If someone ran a 14:30, I really think Kilian would just run a 14:26 or 14:27. His 90+ VO2 max makes him legitimately that much better than everyone, and his times are, more than anything else, indicative of what the second place finisher was capable of running. I hope he gets pushed at Hardrock this year, as he really is capable of destroying that course.
