here's an all-county list for orange county in southern california. a few schools with 2 sub-9s, but only edison (huntington beach) with 3 (even converted, all three would be under 9 for 2 miles as well)...

Coach White practically has had 3 in my book. In 1979, he had a 4:09 1600 kid, Dave Cangelosi, do a full 2-mile on his home track in a dual meet, running 9:09 on a crappy dirt surface. That's 9:06 for 3200m, and if on a synthetic track and not his poor school track, it would have certainly been sub-9.

Born: November 7, 1957 at East Chicago, Indiana. Ht/Wt: 5-8/132, 1.725/60. Started racing in 1973 at age 14 years.

Background: Chapa was Indiana High School 2-mile champion in 1974 and 1975, and 21/2-miles cross-country champion in 1975. He, won the 10,000m in the US vs USSR Jr.: International match in 1975. He wins most of his races by fearless pace-setting, but has a vicious finishing kick. Attends Hammond HS.

Best Marks: 440y (52.0); 88Oy (1:53.0); mile (4:11.0); 2-miles (8:51.0); 6 miles (28:23.0); 10,000m (29:11.0).

Pre-race warmup: Jog 88Oy. Calisthenics. Jog 880y. 4-5 x lOOy fast runs or sprints. Total distance 11/4 miles. Pre-training warmup: Jog 3/4-mile in about 6 minutes. Warmdown after training Jog one mile after track workouts. Otherwise, no warmdown Rest prior to competition: One full day prior to major races only. No morning workouts when competing in the afternoon.

Morning training: Run 60 to 70 minutes continuously, starting at 6:00 AM daily throughout the year, except as noted above. This continuous run is at a reasonably fast pace on streets and roads. The pace is increased once each mile of the run for a distance of about 440y.

The following are evening workouts, in addition to the above daily morning training.

FALL AND WINTER TRAINING (1975-76)

Monday—PM, 3 x 3 miles. Jog 1/2 mile after each.

Tuesday—PM, 4 x 2 miles. Jog 3/4 mile after each.

Wednesday—PM, 75 minutes continuous fast run on roads.

Thursday—PM, Fast, continuous runs of 3-miles, 21/4-miles, 1 1/2-miles, and 3/4 mile. Jog 3/4 mile recovery after each.

Friday—PM, 7 1/2 miles time trial.

Saturday—PM, 60 minutes fast road run.

Sunday—AM, 90 minutes road run. PM, Rest.

SPRING AND SUMMER TRAINING

Tuesday—PM, 10 x 440y as fast as possible under the circumstances. Jog 88Oy recovery after each.

Friday—PM, 7 1/2 miles time trial.

Chapa lifts weights Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week, consisting of 3 sets of 10 repetitions of military press, bench press, and curls. He is coached by Dan Candiano. Chapa competes in ten 2 1/2-mile cross-country races, 5 indoor track, races, and ten outdoor mets annually.

Except when resting the day prior to major competition, Chapa merely substitutes competition for the above training on the day of a race. He eats no food for four hours prior to racing. He rests one week at the end of cross-country, indoor, and outdoor racing seasons before starting workouts for the succeeding racing season.

I bet Big Bear High School is the smallest public school in the nation to have had 3 boys go under 9:00. A rural school in a low socio-economic area with only 750 kids.

Big Bear is at 6750'+ and 2 of those boys are brothers. The elevation is an advantage and having the right genes show up on your doorstep is just the luck of the draw.

Low socio-economic areas are typically advantageous when it comes to running as well. Being tough, lean and having a chip on your shoulder come in handy when running. Student population is somewhat trivial when it comes to outliers.

At the Loucks Games today, three kids from LaSalle High School in R.I. broke nine for 3200 meters. The slowest was 8:57.7, worth about a 9:01.0 for a full deuce.

Has this ever been done? Three in the same season, yes we know that's been done by a huge margin by Hammond, but three in the same race?

LaSalle had three and St. Anthonys had two at Loucks.

Speculation is the "Mother of All Bashing" on message boards...but St. Ant's has a pretty good third guy who was out sick, and White Plains has literally been a PR factory @ 3200m these past few years.

Three in one race from two different schools would've put this whole conversation to rest for good. lol

Rockford HS from michigan will be on this list soon i'm guessing.

Ritz went sub 9, idk if hartmann did. but cole johnson (4:10 miler) probably will go sub 9... also harding has a good chance to go under 9.

La Salle Academy of Rhode Island has three sub 9:00 guys on their team right now. Matt Bouthilette, David Principe, and Jack Salisbury all ran sub 9:00 at the Loucks Games this weekend in NY.

Three sub 9:00 guys ever on a team isn't that rare. Three guys in one season/race, however, is pretty uncommon.

Hammond is not a pleasant place to run. Industrial, flat. Lots of concrete. Cold snowy grey winters.

They did this pre internet and did not get much fame, recognition or praise for it until later.

No high tech tracks. I believe the best they raced on was an asphalt track, maybe with a little shredded tire mixed in.

This is a great example of team mates setting the bar high for each other. Not sure if they truly understood how relatively great they were. Maybe they did not fully understand how high the bar was, so it was not such a barrier. They had to run fast just to be as good as the other guys on the team.

Also Hammond had some ok runners before but by no means were they a powerhouse running school with a long tradition/history of success. Coach C. just got three guys to commit and buy into crazy training sort of out on an island, and it paid off. Of course the three were strong enough to survive the work.

Maybe it was not sustainable, but it was amazing while it lasted.
