I know a guy who had his thyroid removed for a nodule. He says it's the best thing that even happened for his weight. Just adjust the dose to the high side and keep the weight off, with great energy levels to boot.

i take back the 2009 to 2014 comparison. he is leaner and stronger. why wouldn't he be though. i don't see much difference between how he is now and how he was at the olympics or in 2011 though.
look at the flotrack video of him doing his tempo on the treadmill two winters ago, his hamstrings are very definitive.
the other thing is the color contrast of the night with the lights and shadow.
indoors, in daylight you will see less veins and definition because of the contrast of the shadows.
THINK about it a bit before just determing everything from a photo.

rupp looks kinda muscular for a 10k runner in my opinion. he looks the same as he did for the last 6 years. he hasn't miraculously lost all the weight suddenly.

Chris Froome has long thin bones. Hard to get any muscles with that body type. Why a cyclist would want to get big muscles if he is not a sprinter? All the extra weight would slow you down on the climbs. Now if he is on drugs or not, that is another story. But I don't think he would need any special drugs to be that thin.
Froome is Kenyan, right? ;)

I should have written "due to various evolutionary adaptations" for clarity, but the point remains. The human body does not tolerate (naturally) body fat under 6% for any prolonged period of time.
Isn't lack of, or minimal, sweating an indicator of very low fat percentage?

Telmisartan is an ACE inhibitor. I was under the impression that athletes preferred Lisinopril . I would appreciate a comparison of these two blood pressure medications.
Any endurance athlete who carefully balances energy expenditure with energy intake can reduce body fat percentage. The difficulty is reducing calorific intake at the same time as ensuring you are eating enough to sustain a heavy work load in training and that the body is getting all the vitamin/mineral stuff it needs to train and race well in endurance events. If the athlete is sufficiently disciplined to follow the dietary regime worked out for them by their scientific backroom boys then a perfect racing weight can easily be achieved. But watching almost every mouthful that you eat/drink is very stressful - which is why very few athletes do this. Is Salazar and NOP are as controlling about every other aspect of Rupp's running it is unlikely that diet is something they would ignore.
If you want to read up on how cyclists can reduce body weight to near dangerous levels I suggest you take a look at Tyler Hamilton's autobiog. In the US postal team with Armstrong weight reduction was very, very important - along with all the other stuff, obviously!
Galen Rupp is not capable for ultramarathon. For 50k or longer distances, Galen Rupp will be beaten by Luke Beevor, Anton Krupicka, Ryan Crouser, Sam Crouser, Jim Walmsley, Luke Puskedra, Matt Flaherty, Tim Tollefson and Tim Young.
I doubt Ryan Crouser is ready to give up shot put just yet.
I'm surprised I didn't comment on this thread because I was already on to the super-skinny thing by then. If you see these guys in person you understand. It does not show up on a camera, even in high definition. They look like bony bodybuilders - you can see every tiny muscle and tendon in clear definition.
It's one thing to have that low a body fat % if you're just posing on a stage, quite another to outperform others in a real athletic event. There is some sort of trick to maintaining peak performance at a body fat level where your body just wants to shut down and regain weight. Considering this year's track performances, I'm wondering if meldonium was the wonder drug everyone was on.

I hope your friend realizes that the thyroid actually serves a purpose and that increasing his dose to keep weight off an energy up will in the end have negative consequences on his body. But hey, he never cared about living into his 50s I suppose.
