1st Sub5 Beer Mile!!!

If you're going to try for a WR you should take the trouble to record it with a camera.

I've tried this myself and proved a legitimate beer mile can't be done that fast.

That's what I feel like I'm reading from some of you nuts. The criticism for doing it by himself has some legitimacy. The rest of you are ridiculous conspiracy theorists.

wouldn't you invite more people to such a performance?just as witnesses?Maybe this was just training and he didn't think he'd actually break it.?

James' running accomplishments are well documented. His drinking credentials, less-so. I'll be a character witness on James' behalf to shed some light on them.

I met James at a beer mile in 2001. He ran 5:25 that night as a 21 year old. Add 13 years of (legal) drinking combined with serious running, sub 5:00 is not a far fetched result. James is also a member of the bi-centennial club (200 shots of beer in 200 minutes). He is the strongest drinker-runner I have ever seen.

I agree with the poster re: matchup with Symmonds. I would throw Max King into the mix for fun.

@Rojo - put this race together! Get James a flight/hotel, and set up the Nielsen, Symmonds, King beer mile matchup in Oregon. That would be legendary.

is having beer poured into pints glasses beforehand legal? i would suggest it should be legal, if it is not already. it would also make things more transparent for these youtube submissions (i.e. you can actually see that the contestant drank the beer)

after watching it, i can't believe he did it. mainly cos his thighs are real fat, and hes breathing like a yeti after even the first lap. sheesh. also, get to a tanning bed, brah.

The Brojo's asked Symmonds about Nielson's beer mile and said that he knew the only way to go sub 5 was to have Nielson do it alone... This was a "KEY" factor in the record being broken and clear teamwork being utilized. It was a pivotal moment and sacrifice by Symmonds, who remained 1,000 + miles away to make sure and not challenge... Symmonds, not even knowing the attempt was happening, showed his character and it was a major factor in his former non-teammate's world record performance... Everything had to go perfectly to get the record, and thanks to Symmonds un-involvment, it did!

On a more serious note...Way to be Nielson! That's a pretty amazing video. I'm glad to see runners retain a level of excellence in things other than huffing and puffing over 26.2 stickers.

Tell ya one thing, Nielson is no slouch. The dude is tougher than he is talented, and he is talented. Symmonds has his work cut out and I bet he does not attempt this until he's pretty darn sure he's ready. There is little room for error and it's really a pass or epic fail now for Symmonds. It's not about a good try, or so close etc. Symmonds is a world class 800-1500 guy who can apparently drink some beer. Now he has to prove it.

At least we have one event over the east africans!

I doubt there's enough incentive for elaborate cheating.

200 shots of beer in 200 minutes.. 300 ounces in 3:20, or 15 drinks. impressive but possible

Furthermore, some races have people handing up the cans once the runner enters the 10m zone, making things slightly faster still. The rules don't seem to prohibit that.

Yes, the website also states that they are not the official beer mile authority and that they merely keep tabs on the attempts and compile the results, and that some rules may vary. In this case, he SAID he was going by the rules in which he held the beer over his head, and he forgot to do it.
