Heckled on long run in Portland Oregon. Best response?

When someone shouts at me or beeps their car horn it's not always obvious to me if it's a heckler or someone that I know (I'm a bit short-sighted, but also it's often difficult to see inside cars if they pass quickly) so I default to smiling and giving them the thumbs up. Not only does this make sure that I don't offend some friend of mine but it has the advantage that it seems to infuriate people trying to heckle. One white van driver I did this to got so red in the face and started shouting so loudly I worried that he might do himself an injury.

I believe the universal beat off, masturbatory, jag-off gesture usually does the trick.

Situations like these are exactly why i'm always carrying. Disparage me all you want and label me as some kind of gun nut, but I choose NOT to be a victim when someone wants to heckle me on a run.

Try it. Be prepared to dodge hammers etc. They get mad, very mad.

One of them tried to rush at me and got tangled in an extension cord and fell. It was highly entertaining.

I think a fun thing to do when being heckled would be to run up to the car waving a knife and foaming at the mouth. Just as you reach the car fall backwards screaming in pain as if the car had hit you. When they stop in a panic, calmly get up dusting yourself off, and say, "it's ok-I was just kidding". They'll be so relieved they'll probably take you out to eat or something.

Had some people who were playing football heckle me when I ran by them the first time, had a gut feeling the next time I saw them they would try to do something stupid. Well they tried to hit me with the football, all I did was pick it up and run. I was laughing so hard seeing these peasants trying to catch me. They eventually stopped and I just threw the ball in a yard. I was visting MO so I didn't care about being seen again.

These days getting mad just doesn't seem as fun as it used to.

So now when my first impression is to give them the angry finger, I just blow them a kiss and smile. Usually confuses them.
