I don't think the race was fixed. I'm just surprised that NONE of the favorites were factors in the race.

Yeah, they got 8 Ethiopians, 7 Kenyans, 2 Europeans, 2 Asians and their agents to ALL go in on this conspiracy and keep it hush hush until the day they all die! This is great stuff we are witnessing on these boards, as Larry Rawson would say….

Just a couple of thoughts:

1. Boston, due to its downhills in the first half of the race, does not favor a front-runner.

2. Boston does not produce traditionally fast times like London or Berlin, likely has a consequence of the hills pounding your quads for the 1st half.

3. Meb's PR before today was around 2:09+

4. When Meb broke away, he was going under his PR pace.

5. Meb is 38 yrs old.

It is quite likely that many in the pack thought Meb was going to blow up. Josephat Boit went with Meb and did blow up in comparison. It is quite possible when the 2nd chase pack was behind Boit and only saw Boit, they could have figured that Meb was either done or going to be done.

Granted, if you are in with the tin-foil hat crowd in the first place, you are not going to allow any reasonable logical thought govern the day.

Yeah a friend of mine is coached by Meb, and Meb told him he was guaranteed to win, and then my friend told another of our friends who told me.

Every American marathon win was fixed. Shorter's 1972 gold? Bought by the mafia. Shorter only ran 2:12 and couldn't even break Abebe Bikila's OR from eight years prior. What's more, 2:09 marathoner Ron Hill ran 2:16:30. And 2:08 marathoner Derek Clayton ran 2:19:49. How convenient for Shorter that the two fastest marathoners in history sucked all of a sudden.

It would be nice if an American could win a marathon straight up, but it will never happen.

Other than the tailwind year, you know, the year Ryan Hall ran 2:04 and still thinks that's not a fluke... Meb's race today is faster than most Boston Marathon wins in the last 30 years.

It's funny to me how many people think Boston is a Barn Burner because of that day... the 2:05 in 2010 is by far and away the best race ever on this course, on any other win, a 2:08 is in line with the winning time...

Except the old guy kept a strong pace all the way to the end. The real question we should be asking is what is Meb on. Men of his age should not win a major marathon.

Or maybe they should have done some more non-paced races before taking Meb, the ageless wonder of non-paced marathons.

Finally, someone that's actually watched a marathon before. A surge is only matched if the field deems the surgers to be legit. Meb gets no respect because he's the slowest of the elites.

You don't have to look too far back (maybe 5 years ago) to see the same thing in Boston when two training partners from Georgia (can't remember their names) led the race for the first 10 miles and nobody bothered to pursue the pair, who were slowly gobbled up and spit out before the race was half way over.

A guy who turns 39 in a few weeks...wins...against how many 205 guys?

The odds are against a favorite at Boston. The odds of a person who will be a MASTERS runner winning are too low to be credible.

Wesley Korir won on a very hot day. It was within the realm of possibility. This is just too far fetched and convenient.

The same people pumping for Meb slag off Lagat and he is the same age.

Meb is not Muslim. Sorry.

take a look at the times of the last 20 boston marathons. Meb's time today would have won 14 of the 20. Only 6 were faster!

The pack just didn't believe Meb had the win in his legs. They underestimated him.

Alright I'm done with this silliness. It's high time for me to get back to work (meaning take a nap since I'm unemployed). You mongoloids feel free to continue on with my thread in a serious manner if you wish.

If this was indeed 'fixing' it would be like the most subtle fixing ever, with the only stipulate being that they let Meb go early on in the race.

The last 10 miles were a real race. Chebet did not have it in him to get to Meb, and those saying he jogged it in are kidding themselves. A guy full of run jogging it in looks much different than a guy who has nothing left to give, and Chebet was absolutely spent. Perhaps that was because he had so much reeling in to do.

As for letting people go, it's happened plenty of times. Hartmann was allowed an early lead two years ago I believe. The top africans usually don't give chase when some dude that they don't view as a threat takes off. They won't let a Kipsang or Mutai go, but a Hartmann or Meb, or other runner not seen as a true contender? That's somewhat routine.

Someone made a good point that may have played in here, and that is at one point there was a good gap to Boit, and another gap to Meb, and it's quite possible the chase pack thought they were together and were okay with a 30s gap when the reality was 60s+

I don't think it was fixed, but I must admit I thought about that.

I think that several posters have already figured this out. Meb, despite his Olympic medal (ten years ago) and NYC win, wasn't somebody the leaders thought they had to worry about. His PR was notably slower than the big guns. So they let him go. He made his move pretty early. What was it, eight or nine miles in? That's way early. A group decision was made that they didn't have to worry about him.

But he is a wily racer and he was having a PR day, which they couldn't know until it was all over. (Most conspiracy claimants are forgetting that.) I said to myself, "Meb is more experienced than any of these guys. He wouldn't be making the move unless he knew he was having a really, really good day." He scored both his Olympic medal and NYC win, if I'm not wrong, by coming from behind.

So these guys are thinking, "He's too old. He's crazy. He'll come back."

By the time they realized that he wasn't coming back, it was too late.

That's my line of reasoning.

But the cynic in me still finds it amazing that so many strong runners failed to course-correct by 20 miles and take off after him.

Read the stats below trolls. Legitimate win for a real American.

The pack hardly ever let someone just run away with it anymore. I appreciate he's not a 2.04 guy, but he's obviously someone who can run a bit.

It's not like he got away with a few crazy fast miles, he was just allowed to ease away.
