It's nearly impossible to compare splits from one tri to another. Distances are seldom accurate or the same (sprint tri bike course can range between 10 and 15 miles). A bike course with lots of traffic, turns, wind, low humidity, and hills, on a rough road: will be massively slower than the same distance on flat smooth tar with no traffic or wind, high humidity, and only one turn. Even on the run course, which is least affected by environmental conditions, it's unusual to get an accurately measured course.

So the only real comparison is between athletes..

and read the docx (horrors) on 'how are race scores calculated'.

His wife commented on facebook that he has recently taken a break from running and just swam/cycled and has just recently started running again. Break was due to a extended track/road/xc season.

Judging by pictures, physically, webb looks best he ever has. A LEAN muscular look. Even during webb's 07 season he just look TOO thick/muscular.

From what I can understand, triathlon times are basically like cross country times. I say this because these times are dictated heavily by things like the weather, course differences, and competition. I'm not saying Webb is amazing at the triathlon, I'm just saying that we're wasting our time hyper-analyzing his efforts based on different athletes on different courses.

So I mean, when it comes to splitting hairs, cross country and triathlon times mean jack. You have to judge the effort based on a "who beat who" basis only.

My pleasure! (though I know you are being facetious). Roughly 25 seconds or so. Examples: World 5K on road - 13:00 (I think) - track - 12:37 - 23 seconds difference. AR - on road - 13:18 - on track - 12:53 - 25 seconds.

Riiiiiiiiiiight, since the road 5k is contested hotly by the best, fastest on a regular, competitive basis.
