Over here a school is a place where you go to learn something. We even have driving school.

To complicate things, University tends to imply that an institute of higher learning offers graduate level degrees (maybe some other things, but i'm not an academic nerd type).

Then there are Colleges that tend to be more oriented toward undergrad (bachelor's degree) programs, but may offer masters degrees as well.

I don't think i've heard of a university record. College Record sounds too much like collegiate record (CR) which would be something that you'd see in the pages of TFN.

School record is really the best phrase to use.

British people use the term university because it sounds more pretentious than saying school. A university is a type of school. Using school in place of university is always correct. In this instance, while replacing university with school is also correct, it adds an unnecessary level of specificity that does not change the meaning or intent of the original sentence.

No, they call it a university because that's what it is. Usually just saying Uni. Unnecessary level of specificity - using that over-elaborate sentence defeats your own argument! If I say to someone which school did you go to in America how the hell do you know what they mean?

No, we would not say "school" record if someone broke the record for all schools. It's singular. Alan Webb, e.g., has the "high school" record for the mile. It probably would be more grammatically correct to say that Webb has the "high schools'" record as his record covers a lot of schools, but we all understand that means that no high school runner has run a faster mile. My oldest son once broke his high school's indoor mile record. If I tell people he had the "school record" everyone would know I mean he has the record for his particular high school though again, proper grammar probably should have me say he had "the school's record" as it's possessive.

At any rate, it's not an attempt to sound cool. It's simply the usage we've developed. The oldest son is now a few weeks from graduating from his university. If I say that "he's still in school for a few more weeks" everyone will know what I mean and I'll sound normal. If I say something like "He's still at university for a few more weeks," as many of you in the UK would, people will think that's strange and perhaps think I'm being a bit affected.

My Div. III college room mate Larry Hadley broke 29 way back in 1984 at Penn Relays and he was not the first, nor the second as I recall. He did not have the DIII record. 29:00 is a monster achievement for a D3 runner of course, but quite a few (way more than two) have done it. Too bad DIII records are hard to search on inter-web.

From that link, it looks like your friend broke 30 minutes but not 29 (as in under 29 minutes).

They would probably use context clues (what are the chances you are asking about what driving school or elementary school?), or ask you what you mean...this is a really strange thing to get all worked up about.

People always ask me why track isn't more popular. One of the reasons is inherent. Basically, most races are practices for people.

Yes score is kept but the won/loss outcome is meaningless for the vast majority of people participating. The Oregon boys wanted to get in a nice workout, get used to 25 laps on the oval and get the regional qualifying time out of the way.

In the case of Ches, I fully understand dogging the 10K. Only a few weeks removed from a hard indoor season and in a build up phase for the outdoor season is probably not the best time to run a hard 10K. I kinda understand where you are coming from but Ches is too young and too talented to risk a hard 10K with nothing at stake. Also, unless you are getting in the appropriate milege, a track 10K can stay in your legs for several weeks.
