I believe Magness brought the idea to the NOP... Although he probably got it from Canova. The reason for the postrace workout is that there are hormonal shifts postrace that allow you to take things up a notch in training... Get that supercompensation going.

I think he said something about how it is difficult to fit training between these attempts. No taper for the 5k. Some for 2 mile. Full taper for the mile attempt.
He mentioned getting in a bit of a speed workout. not having room for much else. Check the flotrack video.

Totally. I've never met a person in normal life with braces, just those doping a@@holes.
It actually pretty smart and maybe one of the key reasons Rupp has become world class. Americans tend to follow what keeps them mediocre. Building a huge workload base of extreme workouts post race conditions make sense as athletes see this stress load in top level competition and championships with rounds.
I took up running a few years ago and after my first races I was so spent that jogging afterwards was painfull and I often limped just walking. A few years on, having upped my mileage from 20 m/w to 50 m/w, after-race jogging is a norm and I a no longer end up on my knees at finish line. After my 800m/2:10 PB I went for a 4 mile run at 6:30 pace which would other time feel very fast for me but compared to 800m pace it felt easy. After a 5k/17:10, 20s off my PB, I felt I did not give it all I had and ran 2 x 400m/65s. I did it without any knowledge of post-race workouts, it was kind of subconscious.
One time a girl athlete of mine in HS ran a PR by 15 seconds to run 4:58 in the 1600. We then did a cool down and took a rest for about 30 minutes, then she ran an 800 in 2:21 which was close to her PR, then cooled down and rested 15 minutes and then ran a 3200 in 11:10 which ended up being her PR at the time, then she cooled down rested about 5 minutes and ran a 64 second 400 split.
I can't imagine how she did this "workout" after going so much faster than she ever had before. No other High School athlete has probably every done anything similar...
This is not some NOP revelation. My college coach had us doing workouts after track races (5k or less) when I was there from 1999-2004...
It will be interesting to see how Rupp fares in what has to be a quest for World Indoor gold. The workload is pointed towards that.
As a fanboy, what I'd like to see after indoors is A) A realistic rest for Rupp and B) A new AR in the 10,000 at Brussels, I understand they will run a 10 this year at that meet.
It's bloody obvious to me.
All these other people copying this workout after race thing are going to have a lot of casualties lieing on the side of the track.
NOPe can accomplish it because they've got some nice drugs to back them up.
At some point, it just becomes laughable.
This is like Sosa and McGuire all over again.
Do you really think it's possible to run an all out 5k or 2mile, faster than any American ever. Then after knock out a session that would be relatively tough, even when fresh?
These aren't half sessions here. We're talking 5xmile closing in 4:01. And 400m repeats in 54.
This isn't stroll outside and do 10x200s in 30.

Rupp has been doing this kind of stuff since he was in high school. If he was going to get injured from post race workouts it would have happened a long time ago.
How do you guys think his body knows it was an American record?
Does anyone know if he's still taking medication for hypothyroidism? I mean doing that kind of a workout after running that kind of a race, it's just crazy.

You said you hadn't given it your all...one strike against you.

We ran after races as well, but not full blown out repeats.
The goal was not just the AR, this was an attempt at the world record. On the same track approx. 1 year ago he ran 7:30.7 for 3000. The world indoor mark is 8:04.3. 7:30.7 for 3000 equates to 8:04 for 2 mi. And Galen is supposed to be in better shape this year. That is why they hit 1600 in 3:59.6, and 1 mile in 4:01.0, that was the goal, 8:02.xx
You don't bring in a rabbit who has run 3:30 for 1500 unless that is exactly the pace you wanted and or needed. That pace continued through 2400, he slowed markedly over the final 819m. Why? I believe it was because of the post race workout after the 5000, in combination with running so hard for 5000 with no taper.
It may be that the biggest goal is to win at Worlds, but this shows how tough it is to get world records and win at worlds. But I say God bless them for going for it!
