Ferritin below 40 60 mg ferrous sulfate
Ferritin below 30 125-325 mg ferrous sulfate
Ferritin below 20 325 mg ferrous sulfate
This is the supplementation protocol that I have always used and it works pretty well. As I previously mentioned, it is not a bad idea to switch days between liquid iron and pill form. This helps to ensure that one type is absorbing.
With the 325 mg dose, you can always split the pill and take it twice daily. This can help with any gastrointestinal issues.
We have had a lot of luck with the pill Hema-Plex as well. Seems to not have much GI issues and absorbs fairly well.

This is very similar to what he presented at the most recent Super Distance Summit at High Point last January. Ferritin is key!
Not sure why some posters are hating on Concerned Dad.
Scroll down to pages 8-12 for the anemia/ferritin stuff.
Its difficult because little ladies that age sometimes don't or can't describe things well. Two ladies, I had problems with, both had mothers that were insane pushers of their "Prodigy " daughters. I refused to run them, Doctors could not figure it out. Horrible stomach pain, never went away, one of them headache, sore throats and temperature increase to 99.3 when running...that never came down for 8 days! I shut all running down immediately. Both mothers dumped me and the Doctors. Both girls then faced their new HS coaches. With the pain they jumped to 35 or more miles a week from 11. Both girls went down for good and never ran again. Like in 8th or early 9th grade. I mention all this because 7 years later both the girls contacted me. We talked. They said they lied to me for about a year, they were afraid to upset parents. They knew I would shut it all down. After millions of Doctors etc nothing got better. Symptoms got worst. The girls could not go to school at all. All kinds of internal problems. The new coaches, like the Moms, said they were cry babies. I really felt, instantly, that both girls bodies were rebelling, telling us instantly somethings wrong and here are some alarm bells. Both girls still feel to this day that if they would have stopped, and proceeded with Doctors and normal every day life...they would have been much better off. The girls are a little better today, but they can't run much or the symptoms come back. I remember not wanting a hair out of place for these girls every day normal future life. Let alone, pain every day for the next 8 years, so far. Both girls had run 4:29 and 4:30 respectively, for 1500 at age 12. God I don't know you guys tell me. Doctors never had a ounce of diagnosis...nadda.
Doctors killed my best friend by forcing medications on her that she had refused. She was a very healthy and alert woman before that, always happy and alive.
They killed her in just a few hours, and this happens every day, in every hospital in America.

I know what you mean. I didn't even get into that part of it. The thing is these girls symptoms would stop after running. When forced to keep running, it hit, and they had the symptoms all day long for 7 years without running. I was one, if a girl had a blister on her toe..that was it! How did this happen, I wanted complete recovery, state of the art new shoes. Next run I'm checking..turning red again, shut it all down till we figure this out. I'm not gonna have a 12 yr old girl suffer any damage, no matter how small. Her every day life and happiness and health and safety is paramount. I just don't know what is going on with some little ladies internally, sometimes running seems to set off symptoms.
