It wasn't Turriff who broke the record. It was Dave Bergum. I tied it on my final leg then Bergum actually broke it on his leg. Turriff ran the very last leg as the 24 hour time limit expired. I also remember those names you mentioned. Agree on the asskicking. Dave Uhrich was another one.
Ah yes, names that used to torment me. You're right, I only remembered who ran the last leg, but recall now that the record had gone down earlier. Incredible feat for a bunch of high schoolers. Seemed like everyone on that team went 4:15 in the mile at some point during track season! Thanks for the details. Anybody still running?
Nope, not Hector, but I did see him last year. We had a huge reunion for the retirement of our old CC coach Dave Moore. All of his runners from the early 1980's showed up, some from far away (I came in from SD, and John Anderson (yep, the guy on ESPN and my former next door neighbor) came in from CT).
I'm SA, and I think I may have a pic of the two of us running at the state CC meet as juniors (behind some of those already mentioned). My dad took the photo. I can't remember which of us got the better of the other that day (I went 15:53). I'll look for it and if I find it I'll post back. If I have it I'll scan and send it.
OK, I think I found it. I don't know if you remember, but were you wearing a striped yellow singlet with a white and purple long-sleave shirt under (#195)? I'm pretty sure that's you. I have one pic at the mile mark, and you're actually running right next to Hector and Mike Clark. The next shot is with about 200 meters to go. You are about 4 meters in front of me, and I'm kicking like a mother! I don't know which us got there first, but I'll look.
Confirm that running attire is yours and I'll go scan these.
I also have a cool shot of the results board showing the top 5 individuals (T. Hacker, Peske, Stinzi, D. Hacker, Jenkins). My gosh, the depth of that state that year was truly amazing.
Actually, you were a senior that year, and I was still a junior. I was looking through some old results. 1979 County meet, DP 7th and SA 8th (1 second back!). State meet, SA 36th and DP 38th (must have caught you!). Too funny!!
Now you got me SA. At least in name. I remember you. However, that pic you have is not me. I dug out some pics I have of the 1980 State CC meet and I was wearing a yellow short sleeved t-shirt w/dark green shorts and a yellow and gold wool hat. I was #179. I see #195 as well. I also have a pic of you and I side by side early in the race. If it's you. The pic is from the backside of both of us and you are wearing a dark blue t-shirt with a white, long sleeved turtleneck undershirt, silver shorts and white gloves with dark blue trim around the wrist. You had blue and yellow shoes. Your hair is/was black (hah). I too, finished at 15:53 but they gave me 38th place. I also have a pic of just Stinzi and Hacker, side by side, leading the field. If memory serves they finished at 14:54. Wow! Guys like us never had a chance.
You guys had a damn good CC team in 1980. Clark, Fischer, you, D. LaHey, M. LaHey, Lukes and Noble. You had 28 points in the Sectional meet alone. However, I got you that day as I finished 3rd behind MC and HF.
I don't see anyone anymore from that 24 hour relay team. Every now and then I will run into Turriff but not often. Don't know if any of them still run. I know Turriff doesn't and either do I. Passed on college because I only wanted to go to run. Too much $ to spend just to run. Didn't want any more schooling. After high school I couldn't retain the competative desire running on my own. Guess I needed the team environment.
Yep. that's me, and I did find you in that same photo with about 200 to go and about a meter in front of me. Hair's about half black now (yep, gray). Started running again about 3 years ago after hanging up the spikes after state CC senior year. Not as fast as I was 20 years ago, but I'm really not that much slower either. I was looking back at results and it's amazing how close we were at many meets, with you getting the better of me at most.
I'll scan that photo at work this week and email it. Are you still living back in GB? My son just started college at St. Norbert, so I get back there still on occasion.
DP & BUM That record still belongs to the Minnesota Footpounders at 277 miles. We ran that relay in Wico. so it counts as the Wico. record.
I look forward to the photo. Yes, I'm still here. Married 19 years with 2 kids. Girl 11 and boy 8. Congrats on your son starting college. Does he run? Actually, I have been running more lately...er...should I say jogging. I mapped out a mile loop and have been timing myself on it. Boy, am I slow. My mind remembers 4:20's but my body says no friggin' way. I ran 6:59 and had all I could do to get that.
Did you say that you were in SD?
Yep, SD.
I decided to enter an Ironman 3 years ago, without having run since high school, and no swimming whatsoever (but I had been cycling competitively for 10 years). Figured the running would come back quick - I was good once, right? My goodness, what was I thinking? First day I ran 4 miles at about 8:30/mile and couldn't walk the rest of the week. Ran 8/mile for 5 months and never felt any better. Figured I had just lost it. Like magic though, I suddenly went from struggling with 8/mile to feeling relaxed at 7/mile about 6 months into it. Ran a marathon later that month and did a 3:11, and have been getting faster since. Stick with it, it'll come back, but you'll have to use all the patience you've developed over the past 19 years!
I'll send it along as soon as I can get to a scanner.

Max Harn:
As I recall you kind of sucked in CC in college, running in one of the most prolific programs in D III history.
How could you be so good before college and after college, and not be any good at CC in college ?
Just wondering.
Copy that on the 19 years. Point well taken. Ironman? That's way outta my league! No time at this point in my life to train for something like that. Jog a couple times a week that's it. You must have heard of the bike rally each year in Sturgis? Been there 11 times. Beautiful country!
Hah! I live in Spearfish. If you plan on heading out next summer, drop me a line and we can get together at my place.
I know it is not a State record but I was part of a Team here in New Zealand that put together the Lynndale Athletic Club attempt on the 24 hour record in November 1979. The guys ran 297 miles and 1243 yards. At that time it was the best ever recorded.
Best of the 10 guys was Gary Elliot who ran a total of 31 miles at an average of 4:42.6 (fastest > 4:37, slowest > 4:59. Gary became better known a couple of years later as Alison Roe's Coach.
Next best was Chris Pilone @ 32 miles at an average of 4:43.
Chris is now known as the Running Coach of Hamish Carter : Olympic Triathlon Champ.
A team from the Chicagoland south suburbs called the Bloom Track Club ran 273 miles in the summer of 1974 at the Glenbard West track. The team had a mix of Bloom high school runners and local college runners: John Capriotti, Jeff Small, Rusty and Terry Bauer, Bob Moffett, Greg Galen, Charlie White, Duncan Mchugh, Pete Farwell, Doc Holloway. This was the Illinois record at the time, and the team consisted of 4 high school runners.
In November 1976, when I was a junior in high school, my Ballard High School (Louisville KY) CC team ran one a week after winning the state meet. We did about 250 miles. Clay Griffin, Dale Sirine, Rick Brill, David West, Steve Fergueson, Lou Armstrong, Malcolm Patterson, I'm forgetting two others, and I went last. It was about 25 degrees that night, and we had a few cots and space heaters in a storage room under the stadium seats. Gary Steier brought about 50 hamburgers from Burger Queen at about mid-night, because he worked for the school newspaper and had a bunch of extra coupons. 8 of us finished.
Why did I suck at CC in college? My coaching sucked. I had a great track coach in Ron Aikin, but my CC coach didn't know how to train me for endurance and he sure couldn't handle my personality. After college I worked with Peter Tegen for a couple of years, and trained with Noel Harvey. Peter knew how to maintain- and even improve- my basic speed, and Noel pushed my endurance. In '88, '89, and '90, we had an awesome training group- any day could include Jenkins, Hacker, Huffman, Hanson, Juric (sp?), Lacey, Niederburger, Dobrient, DeHaven, and younger Wisconsin runners.
The biggest problem I had in College was that, because I had 48 second 400 speed, I was pegged as a middle distance runner- but, really, I was just an endurance athlete with decent speed. In Division 3, if you can run 48, chances are you'll be on the mile relay team and be used to score as many points as possible in the 800 and 1500. If I had run Division 1, I would have been a 5k runner, maybe even a steeple chaser-
Or, maybe, all through college, I just got fat during the summer and had to work all fall just to get ready for track.
anyone who can run a 4:48 after 24 hours has my respect.
