I don't know what felled Patton but he certainly didn't have a great 2013. One quick 60m and one windy 100m in March do not make a great season. If your season ended in May without winning any medals or setting any world records, and you're a professional sprinter, it probably wasn't a good year.

Where would you guess he is going to rank at the at end of the year in the US and world rankings?

Suggest anything you want about what ended his season, but what should not be in dispute is how successful his 2013 season was. Yes, it started off promising, but then it sputtered and came to a complete halt in May. That's not a great season. Webb ran 27:34 early in 2006 but then couldn't produce anything the rest of the year, and I'd call that season superior to Patton's 2013.

Wigand, your post uses numerous red herrings that just add to the argument. Dude opened OPENED with 6.50. He smoked numerous top guys in the US, some of whom were on the US team. A guy clearly at the peak of his career doesn't just 'retire' over a muscle strain (doubtful that was even true--he probably just didn't want to get popped for running a fast time).

We don't know what he tested positive for.

Where is the outrage?

He is training hard for his comeback this summer, after he has been cleared.

Patton and Gay are quite different. I believe Doc announced before the season started that it would be his last season. He probably put everything he had (probably more than he should have) into indoor to get his speed up, and it ended up costing him. He ran a slow 10.07 in Kingston where a bunch of people tested positive and obviously wasn't himself. It could have been that 9.75w that damaged him.

Gay tested positive for testosterone, which is officially a steroid. The source could be as innocuous as DMSO or it could be a SARM/Steroid in a cocktail. He tested positive several times and that usually means he was on a banned substance and didn't know it.

Pretty strange that nobody's talking.

To summarize, as rumoured he used anti-aging cream from anti-aging specialist Gibson which was clearly labeled as having banned substances.

He probably assumed the masking agents he was using for all the other substances would have covered it up

fwiw, I think he deserves to come back a whole lot more than gatlin does, as he's faced up to it, taken it on the chin like a man, and dealing with the consequences. more than most any athlete in his position can say.

WORD, brah. He was more man about it than any of the Skinny distance runners will ever be. He needs to come back so we have an honest fight between him and Bolt.

Someone he trusted made a mistake, Gay has suffered long enough, time to forgive him and welcome him back.

I am glad he has seemingly taken this honestly but does that mean he deserves less than a called for 2 year ban? No! He wasn't innocently duped. He willfully sought the help and made a choice to take the drugs that are clearly marked with banned substances. He spoke to several in his group about it and some told him to stay away and he ignored that advice.

The reason I think for the delay is the debate over the US silver 4x1 medals in London. Some conflicting statements provide evidence that Tyson was taking this prior to London and he is fighting this legally to prevent his and others on relay losing their medals.

One thing is certain Jon Drummond should receive a 10 year Mark Block like ban for his involvement in this affair, carrying around all over Europe.

I agree he's not entirely innocent per se, but he's actually cooperating with usada, unlike say hellebyuck, jacobs, akor, etc. I don't even see the same thing from asafa powell or the other Jamaicans, so I'll at least give him credit for that.

the only people in recent memory to get reductions (other than the lance armstrong cyclists) are merritt and hesch, can't think of any others that were cooperating, and neither of the previous two helped as much as tyson is right now. there's going to be some good to come out of this from what I hear, so I have no problem with tyson getting some slack for bringing in some other schmucks.

Top sprinters know that there's no cream in the world that actually does anything for you, unless it contains testosterone or on of it's precursors. If you, with that knowledge, decide to go experiment with cremes, you're not half the pro you claim to be.

Sorry to say so, but we've seen the last of Gay and Powell on a competative elite level. In Powell's case; the fact that the man was actually experimenting with a calf-blood derivate (Actovegin) tells me that he mentally lost it. Despite the fact that he got caught for a stimulant, it's the Actovegin that worries me most. How deep do you have to fall to inject yourself with a substance that hasn't got any scientific prove for benefitting recovery.

I think that things are cleaning up overall, and that the things these sprinters are doing now are designed to produce short-term maximum performance, but not necessarily to increase that performance. Bolt can do what he wants, when he wants, but the other guys seem to have levelled off somewhat, so Gay & Powell will still be competitive.

Look, they have both doped, and you know what? They keep some of that benefit, same as the other top guys on the circuit, so they will be in the mix, for sure--not a sure-fire medal position, but definitely competitive.
