SPR was a typical Spielberg tear-jerk. Start them out thinking the old man is Tom Hanks, then at the end nope, he's Private Ryan, cry cry. Worst filmmaker in Hollywood.

Agree with Tora Tora Tora
If they ever make a movie based on Unbroken, I think it has the potential to get to the top of this list.
Definitely agree with Tora! Tora! Tora!. Unbroken is slated to be released Christmas 2014. Written by the Coen bros and directed by Angelina Jolie. Don't know if they've started yet, but they're set to film this fall.

Catch-22 is definitely a war book. Sure you don't need to have any military experience to appreciate it, just like you don't need to be an orphan to appreciate Oliver Twist, but that doesn't mean it isn't a war book.
I don't know if you'd classify Breaker Morant as a war movie but it was damn good.
Apocalypse Now is absolutely not overrated.
Battleground was a great film as well.
Sorry but Star Wars takes the crown
Apocalypse Now is an absolute masterpiece. Perhaps the best film ever made.

The Deer Hunter is as great as any war movie ever made.
Although not a "typical" war movie, Dr. Strangelove has my vote.
Check out Danis Tanovics "No Mans Land" for a great movie on Bosnian war.
Also enjoyed: Born of the Fourth of July and The Dirty Dozen.
Fun to watch: Three Kings.
If you're including Miniseries, Band of Brothers, might be the best WW2.
Its hard to compare. But strictly as a war movie SPR is the best. Its the only war movie I know of that on one hand honors and glorifies the service of the soldier, yet at the very same time shows what war really is: trying to stay alive and killing other human beings. Its a pretty amazing achievement by Spielberg when you think about it.
But Kubrick's Paths of Glory is also a good call.

Yea, I've always ranked The Deer Hunter very high. Some very intense scenes. Really brings home the emotional impact/turmoil caused by war. I would highly recommend it for any of you younger folks that haven't seen it.
Hell Is for Heroes ....1962
Steve McQueen
Dam good war movie!
Restrepo.
Free...if you want to watch "hell is for heros"
Great movie!...at the platoon level...up close and personal!
