Of course they do. Like I just said in a previous post, a typical runner runs 30-60min per day. A triathlete might spend that much time per day on EACH activity.
My comment about before/after swimming or biking makes complete sense. The more you exercise, the more things you need to pay attention to. You don't need to worry about refueling or rehydrating during a typical runners run. But when you are exercising for HOURS, then of course you need to start paying attention to those things. Forget the triathlon, thus happens in pure running also or are you going to tell me that it doesn't make sense that a marathon runner would find it helpful to carry salt tablets and fuel gels?
The same thing goes for all of the clothing. Your doing a lot more movement so you need to worry about chaffing, sun exposure, comfort, heat, and muscles strains.
This seems really obvious to me. Are you really a college kid?
30 minutes/day is hardly serious training. I wouldn't think you're a serious runner unless you average almost an hour/day.
I'll go run for 2 hours without any kind of hydration...if it's not hot as b@lls. I feel fine the whole way. Of course, I make sure I'm hydrated to start the run.
I'm a 2:30:XX marathoner, and the only times I've used gels is during a marathon.

Use some anti-chaffe body glide or equivalent for chaffing if you're going to be on the bike for 3+ hours. Put on sunscreen. I agree with you there.
