um, montano had one foot in lane 3 and one foot in lane 2. and she was moving toward lane 3. the russian didn't know when montano the slowly moving wall would cease her rightward tilt so the russian had to get out of the way.

JR, it appears that your definition of 'push' is different than mine. I define 'push' to press upon or against something with force in order to move it away.

Using my definition, and the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary definition, Montano never touched Poistogova.

There was PLENTY of room to weave through and forward between Martinez and Sum. Instead, Poistogova swung her right elbow and hit Wilson like a hungry Russian Bear to finish in lane 3.

Either you continue to view the wrong video or your IQ is very low.

I agree with this. If a car is barreling towards you and you need to get out of the way, you don't politely ask the person next to you, "pardon me, but can I please move us out of the way so we both don't get killed?" You just do it.

In the spur of the moment, Poistogova had to do what she had to do to get out of the way of the impending collision, which was caused by the American.

I just watched the finish a few more times - the more I watch it the less I think the Russian mis-acted.

The first 'swing' was really just a weak brushback - fine for track and field. then it looks like the russian lost her balance as she swerved away from the montano train wreck and didn't actually land an elbow on ajee.

so the first was an appropriate elbow and the second appeared to be a loss of balance, not a punch, and I don't think it landed anyway.

That's a bit of a jump. In a life-or-death situation, you would of course make an aggressive move to get out of the way. Yet, actions should be proportional to the stimulus. If I am in my car and suddenly realize there is a pot hole ahead of me, I do not have the right to intentionally hit a child to avoid the pot hole. It would lack proportion.Poistogova was not in a life-or-death situation. Her actions should be proportional to the situation. In this situation, Montano was fading hard and impeding Poistogova forward progress. If Poistogova just kept moving over and made incidental contact with Ajee, that would have been proportional. Instead, she chose to wind up and throw hard elbows at Ajee to force her out of the lane. That lacks proportion and was too aggressive. I'm not sure if it rises to the level of a DQ, yet it was too much.

Poist should have been DQ, you should not elbow someone like that twice and still avoid a DQ. If you are boxed in you are boxed in, it wasn't Wilsons fault and she shouldn't have suffered for it.

Montanto should have clearly been DQed for interfering with Poistogova. If Montanto didn't interfere she would have been passed by both Poistogova and Wilson(looks like she was going to get 3rd until the bump) and there is no way Martinez could have gotten up for 3rd.You rarely see DQ's in situations like this though. It isn't going to change medals.

Watch the video again. Poistogova threw the elbows well BEFORE Montano started falling. You think Montano should be DQd for slowing down? Really? Should we have a rule that if a runner ties up they get DQd. Or if a runner can't maintain pace they get DQd? That is absolutely absurd.

It's called getting good position. How many runners lose places because they have poor position? It happens all the time. It is part of race tactics to get good position. You don't hear runners say, "well, the guys in front of me slowed down, so I think they should be disqualified. Give me a break. Poistogova had poor position and intentionally tried to force Ajee over.

In this case, Poistogova was never boxed in. Instead of attacking Wilson who had raced the previous ~90 meters in lane 3, the Russian Bear could have moved to her left and through Martinez and Sum.

I seem to recall that needlessly moving out in the home stretch was cause for disqualification, or no? Not sure on the Russian's actions.

The reason why Ajee didn't make a fuss was because there was absolutely nothing to make a fuss about. There were no punches, no crazy elbows flying around and nothing to suggest that she is a 'Russian bear'.

Put me in the camp of seeing unfortunate, advantageous contact, but no DQ.

I do not see a blatant elbow throw anywhere. The big eye-catching arm movement (interpreted by others as a pre-blow windup) looks to me like she's pulling her arm away from Wilson after a slight bump. She tries to nudge past Wilson and moves further wide as she loses her balance, but never throws an elbow. Nowhere do I see the vicious, intentional blows that others see.

Aggressive racing at the close of a World Championship race? Yes.

DQ? No way.

At least a spot, but maybe the bronze medal.
