I think Thetford is more than 100m longer than 5k.
Derryfield has been getting easier year by year for at least the last 35 years.
Hereford was crazy but they are doing construction there this year and it may not end up exactly the same but will still be hard.
There was a western Mass championship course in the early 90s (still used I think) that can be really tough if they haven't mowed the course recently.
Mass has ha rotating state champ course. 1 each in east central and west of state
East- Franklin Park. Fair course. Pretty well known.
Central- Gardner Golf Course. 2.9 miles. fair course
West- Northfield Mountain. 5k up a mountain. First 400 is straight across a field. Immediately go up a mountain for the next mile. Very steep at points and lasts for 3/4 to a mile. Winds back down the mountain. Its a tough course. I am not sure it is the toughest but it is up there.
Because it is only the state champ course once every 3 years I can't say this is the toughest
