These guys may or may not be fitter and able to run away from him. But EVERYONE knows his tactics. You'd think that when Mo moves to the front, a couple of them would do a really hard surge to get past and box him in and just mess with his head a bit. I've seen people leading him by a metre but never actually moving in, like they are making space for him.

That's exactly what the Ethiopians did that race. It didn't work.

Agreed. It shows that the race speed was comfortable.

Wigo let me ask you this - is a straight 800 more aerobic or anaerobic? If it's more aerobic, then how is there no aerobic element to closing the last two laps 14% faster than race pace? How can it just be a speed thing?

If you're at your limit with 2 laps to go, you can't drop by that sort of margin. We're not talking about a 120m kick, it's a 2 minute kick.

You're "explaining" it because you're too stupid to realize almost everyone closes MUCH faster than their average pace. The only ones who don't are the ones everyone calls crazy for pushing the pace.

Though technically you're right. Mo hit the bell in 12:21 and finished slightly quicker than usual. Given a more even pace, he'd hit the bell at 12:10 and finish in 55, just like happened in Eugene. Big deal. To run 12:50 he'll have to hit the bell in 11:55 which he can not do. Maybe in 2011, but not now.

Let's extend your logic to Alamirew and Gebrhiwet, who closed Rome in 54 and 55. You say Mo's 53 in Birmingham off an average 64.4 means he's in sub-13 shape. 14 seconds for a -11.4 split, or 123%. 123% of Alamirew's -8.6 off 62.6 in Rome is 10.6, putting him in 12:44 shape.

Alamirew isn't in 12:44 shape. 12:50 at best. But if it were Mo that ran 12:54 with 54 this year, you'd all be saying crazy shit like 12:40. Mo is in 13:05 shape and will not improve on that. Don't be sad. 13:05 is pretty good.

You honestly think Mo's fastest time of the year is going to be when he was recovering from sickness? That ruins your whole argument right there. 2:22.8 last 1000 shows great speed and endurance at the end of the race. He beat two 12:55 guys handily therefore he is in sub 12:55 shape at worst.

A great example of this is Salazar's comment post Pre2012 when Farah ran 12:56.x and Galen 12:58.9: “I think both he and Mo were in 12:50 shape on a perfect day.”

What a cesspool. They both run sub-13, but he has to further sensationalize it and say they could have run even faster? Who else does that? Nobody and that's why Salazar is one of the least liked coaches in all of Earth.

I'm not sure about "saying anything", but I'll breakdown how it played out in real time for you. On May 28th Tom Jordan announced Bekele's request for 13:18 through 5000 at Pre. At the time of the announcement it was a stacked field of Africans, including Somali-born Mo Farah. The morning of the 29th, Mo switched from the 10000 to the 5000 citing a lingering virus picked up @ the Oxy High meet two weeks earlier.

To push the envelope on the issue Nike held a sit-and-chat with Galen and Mo exactly when Mo was supposed to be on the track for the 10000.

Salazar is a sensationalist salad feeder. I wonder if anyone else who raced/competed in any of the PreClassic had been feeling ill at some stage during the previous two weeks but didn't feel the need to report it to the media?
