everybody realizes that salazar didn't start coaching cain until october of 2012 and she still lives in ny right?

she ran 2:03/4:11 before salazar even heard of her.

And even then, what is the extent of Al Sal's involvement? She has a coach already, and my impression was his input was to coach by proxy, to basically send her workouts. I didn't think he was getting much face time with her.

Wow, in 3 months he only coached her from 2:03 to 1:59 and 4:11 to 4:04?? That's nothing! He should have gotten her to 1:55 and 3:55 by now! I totally see your point.

What is the point of Mary Cain entering 3 events at nationals? She has no chance in the 5000 and doesn't even have the B World Champs standard, but has the A standard in the 800 and 1500.

I agree that she should be focused on the 1500 primarily, but have they posted the order of events yet? Her odds of making the team in 5000 seem lowest, so if I were Salazar, I wouldn't sacrifice the 1500 for a hard 5000 that probably won't be quite good enough to make the team. If she just does the 1500, she actually has a decent shot.

She definitely is running the 1500m at nationals, and she is definitely not running the 800m at nationals. After the 1500m final, Salazar will decide whether she also runs the 5000m at nationals, which is final only and happens after the 1500m final.

He's been saying the 5000m is a "backup plan" if something goes wrong in the 1500m, but even if Cain makes the team in the 1500m, don't be surprised if AlSal has her run the 5000m as a workout. If she misses in the 1500m, I really don't see how she goes top 3 in the 5000m, even off a slow pace. Plus even if she went top 3, she'd still have to chase at least the B standard [if other two had the A].

Anyway, now that Martinez has decided to run the 800m [and presumably not the 1500m], Cain's chance of making the 1500m team look good.

1500 and 800 semis are on Thursday and Friday. Finals on Saturday and Sunday. If she misses the finals in both the 800 and 1500 for whatever reason, she can still run the 5000 on late Sunday. Beyond that, from her comments in Portland, I gather that she has no great love for the 5000 in her current state of training, so I doubt she'll run it unless things completely fall apart in the shorter distances. Another interesting choice occurs at the World Youth Championships trials. There is little doubt she could podium, and have a high probability of winning, at WYC in 800, 1500 and 3000, but will have to choose what to qualify in or whether to skip WYC altogether if she qualifies for the senior Worlds.

Where did you hear this? She seemed to have made up her mind to run the 1500 and not the 800 just two weeks ago.
