Cain NOT a HS athlete anymore

While I think that in general it shouldn't matter too much where the race is run, or against whom, I do think there should be some mandatory requisite of competing in high school events in the same year for records to be considered as records from high school athletes. I'd never suggest Cain, or any other uber-talented athlete, should continue to run against the best she/he can, I think if she doesn't compete AT ALL in high school events, it's unreasonable to consider her results as "high school records".

Where to draw that line, i don't know ... but I do think some contribution to high school athletics is not an unreasonable requisite.

She is enrolled in HS and she is not receiving money in any fashion (that we are aware of). Therefore she is completely eligible for her records.

Athletes of higher caliber often go to different meets than normal kids anyway. So if pros happen to be there then it's not their fault. Plus pros don't throw away their time and money to "pace" a high schooler as you state.

Now people that SHOULDN'T count for American HS Records are those like Cheserick or however you spell it. He's not from here and he's not a citizen. Therefore he isn't setting American Records but rather Best Records. This would be like Lagat setting American Records while still being a Kenyan citizen but living here.

This just helps to ensure that the marks are accurately timed or measured since meets involving five or more high schools would tend to be larger invitationals and championship-type races. 100% performance =3:54.98 at age 18- could be skewed by those Chinese performances.

I could see Cain running 3:58* next year. Perhaps even a second or two under 2 for the 800 if she works at it.

This would be the equivalent of a 3:33 1500 for an 18 year old male.

Male 18 year old record: 3:31.42

You guys are forgetting that Mary Decker didn't run against high-school competition either. When Mary was setting World and American Records in 1973/1974 there was no girls team at her high school. She was still a student at Orange High School, still racing the best she could find. We still think of her times as high school marks.

Don't worry OP. When Salazar and his group get busted for performance enhancers, such as faking thyroid issues, her records will get whited out. It'll be a shame for the sport, but fair is fair.

Exactly. She's in high school. She's an athlete.

If Cain were to run even one race vs prep competition I would say she is a HS athlete but SHE made the decision to forego HS comp and thus is NOT a HS athlete.

Consider if any of the other top HS girls were to be in the races with Cain what they MIGHT could run as well. Cain is given an unfair advantage JUST in terms of performance benefit.

When Maria Mutola was enrolled at Springfield HS in Oregon her marks were not considered for HS records. So are we gonna say that well we are ok with AMERICAN HS athletes doing what Cain does but not Mutola who was originally running HS races before declared ineligible by the Oregon prep association. She then ran open races and ran sub 2 in the 800.

We can't have it both ways. I am not a Cain hater, just trying to be fair to all the other runners to come who would like to pursue the "HS" record.

I had to opportunity to ask over a dozen elite 800/1500 meter runners at Pre and with any bias in my question asked their thoughts on Cain setting HS records. Every single one said "she doesn't deserve the HS records, she has not run a HS race all season!"

I have thought this all along like couple others on this post stated.

Were any of her records run with the assistance of a professional "rabbit". I think it makes a difference and haven't seen that concern in any thread.
