The vast vast majority of people sent to prison have a drug problem. A very large number/percentage are drug related crimes - these include burglary and thefts to get money for drugs (even where no drugs are present and it is not technically a drug charge). I don't see many people sent to prison for mere possession. Those that go are almost always sent for dealing. Even street level marijuna dealers often don't prison (absent bad prior records). The dealers that get prison tend to be selling heroin or crack. Meth is not a huge issue where I am.
As far as marijuana, I have seen the feds decline to deal with cases involving more than a million bucks worth of weed. They leave that to us state prosecutors.

There's a case to be made against the "war of drugs" as it applies to pot. That doesn't extend to meth. For methheads the best thing you can do for them is get them off the street before they kill themselves, starve their children, or kill someone else. Also, the rate of marijuana use is significantly higher for whites than minorities.
Anyhow, that's very sad about Moen.

The beginning of the article is very misleading. Although it says that he "will spend eight years in prison after his sentence on Thursday for methamphetamine possession," his sentence was not for mere possession. He was already a convicted felon (felony theft) with an outstanding arrest warrant, and he was convicted of illegal firearms charges and possession with intent to distribute. Eight years for possession would be one thing, but eight years for a convicted felon who is dealing meth, illegally carrying a loaded handgun, and wanted on some other outstanding charges is quite another.

Which is the sort of stuff that goes along with being a meth use. They are not just sitting on the couch eating cheetos and watching TV.
I will never understand why anyone would start doing meth. Most drugs have a few actual satisfied customers. For example, I tried coke once. I'm not going to do it again, but it was a fun experience for the most part and I'm glad that I gave it a try.
I have never heard anyone say the same about meth or heroin. I've never known anyone who just smoked meth on the weekends and lived an otherwise normal life.
The first time you drink alcohol, smoke pot, do coke, etc, you can tell yourself "sure there are degenerate alcoholics, lazy pot heads, and coke fiends out there, but I probably won't end up like that." With meth, you take the first puff knowing that you're giving your life to the drug. The difference betwee coke and meth is like the difference between driving too fast and intentionally driving into a tree at high speed. The former is risky behavior. The latter is gauranteed to kill you or horribly screw up your life.

This is a rational person's answer.
Moen was clearly distraught over the death of his brother and not in a good frame of mind. He made some bad choices and it seems to have snowballed.

Most meth users are not gun-toting drug dealers.
I'm not advocating any particular approach to the "war on drugs," I'm not defending this particular sentence, and I'm not suggesting that this guy would have become a dangerous felon in the absence of a meth addiction, but it is worth recognizing that this is nowhere close to being a mere possession case.
I remember following Moen years ago, some funny stuff then, not so funny now.
Sad...maybe they saved his life....and maybe he won't be able to deal with prison life....lots of questions

My dad randomly mentioned to me once that he sometimes did meth at parties in the '70s. He's a successful doctor and doesn't have any substance problems, so I think you're being entirely too general unless you actually know anyone on meth. It's a very addictive drug, but you won't become a meth addict just because you do it sometimes.
Crystal Meth wasn't introduced until the 80's. Amphetamine (reds) is extremely different than crystal meth. Hell, up until a couple years ago most mlb players were using reds to stay awake during long road trips.
Most long distance truck drivers are also on reds. They are very different than crystal meth
