I think there is certainly room for major improvement with more professionalized training. Mary needs a lot of form work, and Alberto is the man to do it. She lopes along, with too much vertical oscillation, with hunched shoulders and awkward arm carriage. When Alberto tweaks all that and gets her running more efficiently, watch out.

The western world is at a point were evolution is already backwards when it comes to the physical area. In the US, the average newborn has a lower life expectancy and will be shorter than their parents. We have peaked, physically.
Africans too will get to the point where running is no longer required to make a living and times will eventually come down.
I also believe we have seen the WR for times to come in the 5000m (mens side). Sub 12:50 may be possible without drugs but I doubt sub 12:40 is.
And about your sub9 for the 100....MORON.

Good analysis. I hope she stays healthy, she could run 4:07-4:08 this year. She definately has the potential to run sub 4 minutes for 1500m but not for a mile, that is a silly statement.
She has made people forget about Jordan Hasay, although Hasay had a nice pr in the 3000m last week.

Cain is a talent like the US hasn't seen in decades. She will bust 15, crack 25 for 8k, run the expected just under 31 10k, dabble in the half and longer with less than stellar performances then fade into oblivion like every other wunderkind. Wait and see.
If you had a HS junior boy with PRs of 4:32 and 9:38 for full 1 & 2 miles you would say he was decent. If someone told you they expected him to break 4:00 for the mile some day you would be slightly puzzled and ask for his 800/400 PRs. When you hear they are 2:10 and 55.x you would laugh at this prediction.

Even a high school BOY who ran 9:38 at 16 would have to make an incredible improvement to run under 4min eventually. Even if we disregard that women mature later, a 16 year old who runs 9:40ish might run 9:20 or 9:10 as a senior. Maybe under 9 with a great coach. That's sub-4 potential, but not a guarantee.

I really disagree with this.
Again, the 800 PR is 2:03.
I say those are pretty good indicators for a boy to potentially break 4 at some point.
I am sure there are tons of men that broke 4 that had those numbers or worse at that age.
My 1500 PR is 3:42.1 - basically a 4 flat mile effort.
At 16 I had split 55s in the 400 but certainly could not hit those times in the longer events.
Senior year I ran 2:02.
The key for me is that I did improve to 50.2 for a 400 in high school and you need speed close to that for sub 4.
I am not saying Mary Cain will break 4 but if a high scool boy had her numbers, you could say he had a shot as there could be greater improvemnt with physical maturation.
Women in general have made pretty pathetic improvement in middle distance running over the last 30 years even as participation and training methods have improved.
Mary Slaney's 1500m American record turns 30 this year.
I think women are due for a few jumps in performance.
It may be reasonable to think that this Mary may run a 4:10 mile at some point.
But again, if a boy was running her times, you could talk about a future sub 4.
