The fact is, that in Africa, and not just Kenya, but Uganda, Morocco, Ethiopia, et al, the majority of women
are still astonishingly oppressed! Slaves in a mens world
to be somewhat hyperbolic! They are shy. Many are veiled.
Many are so oppressed that it would be risky just to don sweats and go for a run somewhere. This is reality. We are hidden from this truth. But things are changing. Once the veil of muslimism, etc. is lifted and women are free
to make their own choices in life, and they realize they can
get a very valuable education just because they can run fast, the playing field will level out...for men and women vis a vis opportunities. My guess is that there are, even as we speak, a handful of sub 3:50 - 1500 meter woman that could break onto the scene any year now. Look at the distance events at the 1964 Olympics! How many black Afrian distance runners were there making an impact? One!
Then 68! Then 72! Now how many Caucasian runners will make any of the finals from the 800 meters up? Women will make a similarly sudden impact. Certainly there are limitations on the human body...and men are much closer to having reached those limitations then women are. You'll see a half dozen women go under 3:50 for the 1500 before you'll see any man go under 3:40 for the mile!
Just the fact that there are many women that can run 50 second 400's proves that the near future holds a sub 4 minute mile. Hey, it might not be this year...but it will be a lot sooner then you think!
