It was not meant to be sexist in any way. I had the exact same thought the first time I saw Rob DeCastella who also had "thunder thighs". What's remarkable about him was that he was running 26.2 and at the time ran it faster than anybody ever had, so obviously if you've got a good enough heart/lung machine you can do it with a different kind of chassis. It's just that there are not a ton of world class distance runners who are built that way.

Being competitive may not be the same as being fit, but I would argue that it's a major contributing factor.

True. But if men were constantly subjected to unreasonable standards of physical perfection, they just might be as sensitive.
The lack of "hottest male runners" proves the point. I'm not complaining about them, because I enjoy looking at them as well. But you can't blame women for being a littel sensitive, when they know how much value is placed on their appearance.
Also, the title of the thread "Thunder Thighs" doesn't do much to persuade the female members of this board, that its intentions were anything but negative.

WHAT THE FUCK IS AN EXPATLSE?!?!?I learned in med school that if women's thighs do not touch when their feet are together then they are malnourished. Healthy females (aka females that exercise) are supposed to have some fat - more so than men. It is a simple screening method to start to question if a woman has an eating disorder - a serious problem for many athletic women and even some men, especially runners.

I don't think it's silly that we women fly off the handle when something of this nature comes up. It is the very fear of looking like this woman in the midst of all those skinnies that makes me hate bunhuggers and try to lose 10 lbs before cross counry starts. I used to flip through the fast-women images to find an elite runner that looked like me, and now I've found her. Strangely, I don't find this encouraging at all; I'd rather be malnourished than be mocked and judged so.
