I was a matter of National Security. After a career in the Army, he had to bone up on undercover operations. He went down for his country, but he had no idea she would blow his cover quite like that.

Those Iraqis are far better off without Saddam and his ilk making these people live in fear of their lives. And the women and children of Afghanistan are far better off being able to get an education and start to finally have the potential to thrive.

For example, there's a super awkward photo of them shaking hands in a weird photo studio in front of a bunch of international flags. What is that all about?

The one with him in cammies and her in front of the Afghanistan and NATO flags, among others, was almost certainly taken at NATO HQ in Kabul in the spring of 2011. Anyone at the HQ could go and get their picture taken with him. The line was REALLY long... Given his schedule, I gave him credit for taking so much time (a few hours) to do this.
The "ghost writer" Vernon Loeb is a runner as well.
