I have been a runner all my life, am around women runner's constantly and they are among the nicest people in the world.
I don't believe the story at all. The guy sounds like a kook, and the writer is a troll, looking to make a name for himself off the backlash at New York.
Obviously the facts failed to check out. Another shameful example of Yellow Journalism from fanboy wannabe writers.

To get back to the original post, if you've ever worked in a service job you quickly learn that there are some horrible people out there who feel entitled to abuse waiters, clerks, valet parkers, and anyone else who provides services to the public with little or no reason.
Running has nothing to do with it.
Fortunately, most people are not like this, but a few horrible people are inevitable.

Also, if you've ever dealt with people, you know that some people like to be victims and are willing to exaggerate or flat out make things up so that they can feel insulted and belittled. I wouldn't be surprised if the janitor was just this type.

No point in arguing about it. It's a public job, so the description is online. A park maintenance worker makes up to ~$42K. A senior parks maintenance worker can make up to ~$47K. I'm not going to dig to find out the specifics of the retirement plan, but they definitely do have one.
This guy obviously isn't getting rich cleaning toilets, but he's making more money than many recent college grads.

There's no way to tell if that's the same deal he was offered. Do we even know if he is working full time vs part-time?
Folks, I a former decent collegiate runner, and a big track fan. I've seen and been around female runners for years and years. It obviously apply to all, but sure applies to many, that they have tunnel-vision and are inconsiderate and rude.
Point in fact: A day before the big meet at Randall's Island a few years ago, a small pack of young females athletes, apparently elites, was running through midtown like they owned it. Couldn't be bothered to break stride to avoid hitting or nearly hitting people like me. Next day AT the meet, what appeared to be the same group did the same thing to me. All I could do was shake my head.
Someone should go to Mission Bay Park and find that janitor and interview him again. That's what happens in a real newsroom. Oh, my bad, runners don't get real news coverage. Only fat fart posers who want to smell Meb's body odor and take upskirt pictures of Meb's junk cover running stories ;-)
Perhaps I should jump in with some first-hand perspective here. The cross country meet last Saturday at Mission Bay Park was the Dirt Dog Series Final. But there were only 49 women who ran, and maybe twice that number of men in the separate guy's 8K. They also staged a sparsely attended kid's 2k. As such, there were no porta-johns rented nor required.
The maintenance man I spoke to at the bathroom didn't know me, or think I was with the running crowd. He just said what he said only after I made an off-hand reference to the runners who were prepping for their competition, as they were the most evident people there at 7 a.m.
As I walked back to my car I thought about what he had said - that runners, especially the women, could be mean. That's when I went back, introduced myself as a blogger, and asked if I could take his picture, cause I now thought this was a story for my blog.
He wasn't indicting all runners, or all women runners. Mission Bay Park is by far the most popular running venue in San Diego, and there are hundreds of runners there on any given day. The fellow obviously had run some negative experiences with some who had acted badly, and that's what spurred his comment.
In light of what happened in New York City the week before with Hurricane Sandy, his impression of runners simply pinged on my radar as newsworthy. Thus, I wrote down what he said, then wrote and posted my story that afternoon.
There was no agenda, only a post that I thought would be of passing interest to some within the context of a larger story on the far coast. In any case, thanks for reading.
