26.2 or I guess you can say close to 27 if you add in warmup.

5 miler around 2pm.

Second time I did 40 was:
20 miler in the morning.
20 miler in the evening.
Ran 30 miles 6 days in a row by running 10 milers 3x a day. And ran 20 miles the next day for my only 200 mile week.
you are such an idiot, ian
Did 31 1/2 on 12/31/1979;
15 in AM
13 1/2 in PM
3 more before dark.
Had about a 32 mile day during cross country camp in 1971 where we ran 4 times that day include two speed workouts.
I heard that the late Dave Hinz, a 2:11 or 2:12 marathoner at Boston in 1982, had a 40 mile day with 20 mi in AM and another 20 in PM. I think he did it in 1980 or 1981.
I also know of a few others who would do a 30 mile training run on a weekly basis for a period of time. They would average 6 to 6:30/mile.
I thought about a 50 mile ultra in the early 1980s where I could break 5 hours but never did it.
How would you know ian is an idiot? I just posted info from some I personally knew who trained like that. It was the norm in the 1970s and 1980s. The guys I referred to were not "Runner's World" houshold names but they were good enough to be in either the 1976, 1980 and 1984 US Olypmic Trials race. Unsung heroes if you will.
62 miles. 2009 Javelina Jundred in Arizona. Bailed on my attempt to run 100.
