Jim Thorpe's 1500 meter time sucks, right?

I think the real point of this thread is that a sucky distance runner is one of, if not the, greatest athlete of all time. Ergo, the greatest distance runners are sucky athletes. We gotta face it, gentlemen.

he probably ran like 20 miles a week max. he didnt have time to train like modern runners do. he was paying basially every sport there was, and probably had a job.still the greatest american athlete

Yep, he won the decathlon and pentathlon (lj, j, 200, dis, 1500). Plus he finished 4th in the hj and 7 in the lj in the open competition.

That's 17 events! He may have been a little tired towards the end.

So does Bryan Clay's 1500, but he is the Olympic champion in the decathlon. Clay also destroyed the SPARQ test.

First off if you just do one 1500 than your time will be a lot better than at the end of 10 events 2nd the 2012 decathlon winner ran a 4:33 100 years after Thorpe. and how and you can't say a time sucks when he won

Nobody here seems to have noticed that when the olympic record was set in 2004 for the decathlon the time for the 1500 was 4:40. From that perspective Thorpe's achievement is outrageous.

Man awarded the title of "greatest American athlete" and "greatest American football player" of the first half of the 20th Century runs 4:40 1500m to win the decathlon gold medal, after winning the pentathlon gold as well, both in records that would stand for decades. oh, and he was also a Major League baseball player. King calls him the world's greatest athlete. In the pentathlon, he won the 1500m by 5 seconds, and won four of the five events. He ran 11.2 in the Decathlon, a time not equaled in the event until 1948. His 4:40.1 on cinders in the 1500m in the decathlon was not beaten in the Olympic decathlon until 1972, though he ran it in mismatched shoes. His 110mHH in 15.6 was better than Matthias in 1948. In the whole 1912 Olympics, Thorpe's performances were the best in four events and top ten in two others. After returning to Carlisle, he rushed for 1869 yards, on almost ten yards a carry, with two games not counted. Of course, he was stripped of his medals and records by an organization that today still recognizes the two marathon Olympic golds of a Polish doper along with many Olympic and World records and medals by other Eastern Bloc athletes in established doping programs with names and dates.
