That's not speed, that's speed endurance, speed would have been Centro, Wheating, and Rupp dropping a 51 sec last quarter on German to put him in 4th place if they'd ever all been in the same race that year.
so we agree, German like El G is not a kicker. cacho was the kicker El G needed to run away from him. German will need to run away from the Manzanos etc...

Just received my June 2012 Track Field News.
On page 45 it states GF had a "laundry list" of ailments. Achilles tendinitis, lower back, knee, then the achilles again.
We finally know what his inuries were. GF has shown in the past that he can get fit really fast. Lets hope he stays healthy for a while.
Also Colby Lowe battled acute patellar tendinitis early this year.
To bad it takes so long to get news on runners injuries.
You guys don't think German could have run 3:51-52 if he had really gone for it with mile training that winter? He opened up in 3:56 and then ran 3:55.0 completely alone both times.
And he skipped NCAA indoor to run World Junior cross country. Why would he do that if he was truly focusing on the mile in training. He truly had a shot at low 3:50s if he had gone for it. As an 18 year old freshman!! Anyone who really knows the sport knows this is true.
I would say that anyone who can run in the low 3:50s as an 18 year old has a very good shot at eventually doing well on the world 1500 scene, regardless of an alleged lack of "raw speed," which no one has any evidence of whatsoever.

Yeah, except for German himself saying that he'd have a hard time hitting 50 in an open 400.
Look young lad, just watch any race German's ever run. You will NEVER see any kind of blazing speed ala Lagat, Centro, Wheating, Andrews, Webb... What you will see (when he is healthy for a stretch) is a remarkable ability to crank out even (and pretty fast) splits.
I'm a big time German fan. I've watched his races since high school. So, I am certainly not bad mouthing the kid. The reality however, is that he will never see any real success beyond college at the 1500, even if by some miracle he stays healthy for an extended period.
For the 5000 or 10000 the story is quite different. If he could stay healthy my guess is that he has as much or more talent at these distances as any American (including Rupp, Solinsky, Lomong, the 2012 Lagat [perhaps not the 2004 Lagat]...).
