Salazar calls you message board rats

I really want to like Salazar. He is the link from the Golden Age, Boston contingent of US marathoners. What keeps me from liking him though is his personality.

In the Runner's World excerpt he bashes on Beardsley compared to Beardsley's humble and respectful view towards Salazar.

He's blamed his personal steep decline on asthma and allergies, heart blockages and overtraining at various times. He comes across as bitter and resentful that his running career faltered. (Haven't read the book, so I don't know what he blames it on there)

He has the best technology and dollars the US has to offer, the best athletes are drawn to him and his group hasn't had the success that reflects that. (Even with "grey area" advantages)

So yeah, we're rats, but what does that make him? A flea?

We're all old, wannabe, armchair quarterbacks. Having been here since the board started, it's like some kind of natural selection for fools. don't be sad man. salazaar is extremely elitist and out of touch. i like his little comment in the movie, "Spirit of The Marathon", where he says something in conjecture of

"I suppose the reason most people run the marathon is because it helps them in their daily lives."

I don't know something about the tone and the way he stressed certain words in that sentence made me think he views anyone who runs a marathon slower than 2:10 as someone doing it in vibrams, in a cotton t-shirt, while on sabbatical from yoga for a weekend.

Doesn't it seem worse than ever lately? Crazy weird stuff, like everyone with half sense has given up and the board is now ruled by total whack jobs. Been around here for a long long time and LR forum has had its bad moments but it just seems awful now.

Junk Master is spot on. If you don't think our American guys are on at least on testosterone, thyroid meds and low dose research chemicals you are nuts.

An example is testosterone. Not banned and the 'normal' levels range from 200 to 800. An athlete at 700 recovers a hell of a lot faster than an athlete at 300.

It's a grey area and most with the resources (ahem...ahem..) will operate in that grey area.

Another question...If you use a chemical and it's not banned yet or there is not a test is it cheating? Is that illegal? Think about it.

As a Master (over 45 now), I can tell you hormone levels effect recovery to the extent that IMO they are more important than coach's technique work or special workout.

Work hard, recover, get faster.

Work hard, don't recover, get slower.

The harder you work, the faster you get.

BUT when you start adding exogenous testosterone and thyroid and other research chems, you no longer reward hard work, you reward the genetic profile that responds the best to exogenous chems.

You end up with chemical warfare, not sport.

Again, running is just lucky there's no money in the sport. Look at football and baseball. BTW there is still no HGH test in the NFL.

So now, as a father of a son who loves football and has the genes to potentially play in college or beyond, what am I supposed to tell him when in comes time to have an informed discussion about PEDS?

Speaking of which, I remember reading about Salazar waking his son, who at the time was a redshirt football player at Oregon, up during the middle of the night to get one more protein shake into him to gain weight.

Are you telling me if he'd do that, he wouldn't just say, "Here rub a little of this cream on your thigh," to raise his T levels up WITHIN LEGAL LIMITS?

I've never understood the reaction that the messageboards generate? We are a professional sport, correct? Galen Rupp is a professional athlete? Does Salazar not realize that people are free to offer their opionions and he is free to not pay any attention. Why does he feel that everyone must treat his athletes with kid-gloves?

Can you imagine Derek Jeter crying everytime someone attacked him on a messageboard or talk radio after he had a bad game?
