high school bans shirtless running

Isn't it illegal- a rule like that? I mean, guys run without shirts on/girls in sports bras all the time in public.

If the AD isn't making the guys on the swim team wear shirts, then he's a hypocrite.

Yes, I am suggesting that wearing a sport bra running down the road makes you a target to a child sex abuser. If you think these people don't think that dressing like that is suggestive to them then you're not living in reality. It's unfortunate but that's the world we live in. A sick person will go for the kid in a sports bra rather than one in a T-shirt. That's the way it is. I wish I could rid the planet of these people but I can't.

It's really silly to think that I could punish or sanction people I think who will harrass or abduct women. How do you suggest I go about doing that? Punish them after the crime? This is not a hypothetical situation. It's very real.

Again, our team policy is when we are off the road I really don't care what they wear. When we are on the road I'm worried about cars hitting them and sick twisted freaks picking them up.

From my perspective I don't care what they wear. As long as they are safe and learning how to run fast.

I'm not from that sick 1% of society that ruins it for everyone nor do I have the ability to figure out who is stalking my kids.

Precisely. High School Federation rules require you to compete with a shirt on. Get used to it in practice.

At the school I used to coach at the rule our AD applied to us was that my boys had to have shirts on while anywhere on campus, but could run on the roads w/out shirts.

The ironic part was the reason we were forced to do that was a few of the soccer girls had complained about the boys running shirtless. The same soccer girls that would practice in just sports bras when it was hot.

I also flipped at our AD when I walked into a basketball practice he was watching that was playing a shirts skins game. "why the hell do my boys have to wear shirts on campus and the basketball team doesnt?" Basketball wasnt happy with me that day.

Yeah, you should have to wear spikes and race bibs every day too. And never drink water during a run, or run more than 5k during practice. And don't even think about training with a watch or jewelry.

As a father, I agree that the rules should ALWAYS be uniform for boys and girls. If someone is going to tell my daughters they can't train in a sports bra on a 95 degree day, then what is the justification for letting the guys go bare chested? There is none.

I can see both sides of the shirt rule, though I personally think it's stupid. ADs get flack from people about seeing the kids out with no shirts, even though the complaints are ridiculous. As long as the rules are uniform for both sexes, kids will deal with it. If it's girls only, it's bull$hit and they should not accept it.

If men can go bare chested in 95 degrees, why not just have your daughters go bare chested in 95 degrees too? It's equal right? Both not wearing the same garment and exposing the same part of the body?

Oh, is there a such thing called modesty, perhaps a term that applies differently to a man than it does a woman?

The reason why girls can't and don't think of running shirt less is that the bumping of the boobs will irritate them and slow them down. That's why they go for tight fitting bras to stop unwanted movement.

This is the same for men if they run without any pants. That's why the running shots have a net or something inside to hold those balls from unwanted movement.

How about girls run without panties and men run shirtless? That would be fair and won't affect their running economies as long as the girls are not in their periods.

This did happen at a track where I live, called Westwood. It's in Morgantown, WV. People claimed they were intimidated by guys not wearing shirts, and then bam, no running shirt less. But we don't run there anymore, and we haven't had a problem.

Your sexy and they know it. Seriously tho, it happened at my school too. The principle said it made the school look bad, but we still ran with our shirts off when he wasn't around.

This happened at my school in Virginia where it got really hot some days in early cross country and late outdoor track season. Our solution was to run "off-campus." As soon as we crossed the street we would take our shirts off. Your AD doesn't have control over whether you wear a shirt off of school grounds.

My argument to the AD was a safety concern. Sweat doesn't cool the body...sweat evaporating does. Going shirtless allows beter cooling believe it or not. Too often the cotton shirts get saturated, preventing evaporation and the loose fitting kind develop a sauna of air between the shirt and the skin warmer than the air temp raising the core body temp. This is a safety concern. One can either mandate a wardrobe of $50+ moisture wicking shirts, or realize that every sport has different standards, e.g. wearing pants in swimming, running shorts in baseball, and loose cotton shirts in running are equally ridiculous.

One objection my AD had was that since guys and girls can't equally go topless, we shouldn't punish the girls for physiology. My argument was that it was equal punishment for guys to wear shirts because of their lack of breasts, so why not do whatever we can for whoever we can?

The other ridiculous argument was the modesty issue. Are 16min 5K runners really going to "turn heads"? Only if the bystander is confused about the 14 pack on their abs only to realize 8 of those were ribs.

What do you mean "just pull off your shirt and run. No one will say anything"? Wrong. She said the girls were allowed to run with just a sports bra. It was the same on my team - guys could run shirtless and girls had to keep their shirts on. If a girl took her shirt off, she was told to put it back on.

You don't know what you are talking about. She did not bring it on herself.

Is there really that much of a difference in the chest of a boy and girl XC runner...not counting the chubbers who go out for XC though who've had breasts since 2nd grade.

I mean, my coach "enforced" the rule in the sense that she made us follow it. I'm sure that I could try to rebel and not wear it anyway, but I don't think it would have been worth it. I respect my coach and want to stay on her good side. So I could have gotten away with it, but some things aren't worth fighting over, really.

At my high school we had to wear our shirts while on campus but the second we left campus we took our shirts off. Girls could run in sports bras once they were off campus as well. I'm not sure what the argument was and I don't really care. It was a ridiculous rule but one we all abided by.
