I agree. The infield is not the track. Random people are in there all the time.

Would everyone be happier if AlSal had only said things like "Right on it." or "A second off, pick it up.". Frankly I think having exact times to think about might be MORE distracting than simple statements.

Great race. Fair record. If you want to complain direct it at the USATF officials - I'm sure they could use some more abuse.

I think you'll find that rule only applies to Outdoor Competitions.

10/10 Yes, you are correct in that the rule is in the USATF manual section for Outdoor Competitions. Even in that scenario, I think it was determined long ago that the track itself is the competition area and coaches are allowed on either side of the track, so long as they are not on the track itself. The rule is more specific for Field Events in that the competition area is considered to be the infield and coaches are not allowed in that area for major competitions (championship events). I am always amazed at how small minded some of these LR poster actually are and that they expose themselves for the kind of person they are. Oh yes, I almost forgot, they are behind some keyboard where only they know who is the idiot. Fabulous race by Rupp and congrats to him for another American Record. This guy is one tough hombre.

Peter Coe coached Seb Coe from the infield. I don't see why American's try to tear down our best athletes when they encounter success.

It is simply not the competition area by any logical stretch or described as such by any of the rules the OP cited.

Just because rules states that the area outside the track is X,Y and Z, that does not imply/indicate anything regarding the status of the infield.

Finally, how can you DQ and athlete because of their coache's behavior? That is total BS. You should kick the coach out of the meet or sanction him/er or somehow.

What if Rupp plugged his ears with his fingers and said la la la la every time he ran by AlSal?

Sick of reading about Orgeon Project and Salazar. With all the amenities they get, the results are merely good. They make big stink but there are so many runners out there who does as much with probably lot less hype.

I just want to see fast performance by anyone at post collegiate level.

Salazar could have stood on the outside of the track on the first turn just past the finish line like everyone else does. But then not everyone could see him and he wouldn't have been on TV. Pure showboating. As usual. It's up to the officials at each individual track to decide where spectators and coaches can and cannot stand; there's nothing inherently sacred about the infield. It wasn't against the rules; it was just obnoxious.

Hahahaha!! Great observation. 2 questions: How did Rupp not know he had spit all over his face (I don't care how tired you are, you know when there is spit on your face)? Why didn't Alberto just tell him "Galen, you have spit on your face"?

A coach just taking splits for future reference is not something anyone should have a problem with, but from 6:30 on it is quite clear that Alberto is shouting those splits out to Rupp--and that IS a violation of the rules.

But good luck getting Chaplin to do the right thing. The record should not be ratified, but this is Nike Track and Field, after all.

You are obviously not a meet official in reality. The games committee is at liberty to make their own boundaries. For instance, at UW, there is no non competition area. Everyone has to be on the infield. Most non championship meets allow coaches on the infield. Go check the grassy knoll again, you're time will be better served there.
