Most of our Pros wouldn't make it in the NCAAs this year! Have you seen results from all of today's races? Collegians running 1:46s, 3:55s...meanwhile the "pros" are running 1:59 and 4:00/4:01....wtf??????
Here come all the American excuses tho...they always follow my posts up with lame crap...."it's early in the season..." "it's an Olympic year!" etc etc...
As though a 3:32 guy running a 3:55/56 mile somehow hurts his chances in London?! Friggin idiots!

Why doesn't everybody saying negative crap and tearing Alan a new one lay off. Talking shit is not going to do anything but hurt his confidence. No he is not running his best right now. But he is the american record holder in the mile 3:46! I do not believe most of you pussies can even run an 800 that fast. He is in a slump making a comeback after injury coaching changes etc. Give him some time. He just needs to get that one race that gives him his confidence back. Do you know how hard it is to be a pro of his stature going to meets like the "Patriot Games" to begin with? He still has the ability i watched him in the race today while i was getting ready for my race. He just needs to break back through and be confident in himself. For gods sake show some respect! He is the American Record Holder!
he looked strong in the video up until the point that he fell. i think the race was an encouraging one. 1:52 indoors is what - 1:49 or so outdoors. getting better.

Agree. He dropped everyone at 600 except for the eventual winner, and it looked like he was going to pop out and sprint past him too when he fell.

watching the race, it seems like he's getting better every race, he definitely seems to be missing that stride he used to have but if you watch at 1:04 and 1:24 he definitely shows he has some speed. I think he's he'll be back. Just takes time.

He definitely showed he had some speed???? Are you kidding me? He gets passed like some DIII runner, and then does a (phantom to some) face plant. At what point of this video of America's world class middle distance runner, America's fastest miler, does he show "some speed"? The whole thing with Webb is disturbing. WTF is a stud like this having to battle young college runners to show he has some speed? Weird.

Here we go again. This is exactly the kind silliness we heard when Webb ran a 1:5X to finish back in the pack in an 800m at some dinky European meet in 2010. Within a few weeks, he was running 3:36-7 and a 3:53 road mile.
Some people just never seem to understand what it takes to get race-sharp.
Of course looking at a home video is not the best source of evidence, but here are a couple of things to consider.
1. His leg speed is not very good as noted on the final backstretch where he was easily passed by the GM runner. If his leg speed was ok, he would have been able to hold the guy off going into the turn. Didn't happen.
2. He looks top heavy, even more than he has in the past.
3. Hard to tell if he did clip the runner in front, but he did get cut off after the first 200, had to slow down and move a bit outside. This second cut might have been his moving up inside instead of first moving out and then picking up speed. But then with his vast experience seems a bit strange to me that he would do something a less experienced runner might do.
If anyone thinks he is in pretty good shape, I don't agree. It seems to me that he would have struggled over the last 40 meters no matter what.
He has done quiet races in the past, one year going up to Boston and running a sub 4:00 at the then new BU facility, while the New Balance meet was at the Reggie Lewis Center. There have been other instances where you just kind of shows up and races without fanfare. So, he apparently likes to run low key early on.
Finally, he has a long way to go, but not a lot of time to get ready....
Dam he actually looked good. Looks like he was good for 1:52.

I relaly think that Webb has to meet a certain number of races quota as part of his contract if he doesn't meet performance goals. That could be the explanation for why he would enter some of these low tier races. He's embarassing Nike.
That fall did not look natural. I feel bad for Webb.
"American excuses?" For goodness sakes, Silas Kiplagat (3:29 1500m and 2nd at WCs if you forgot)also ran 4:00! Do you think he's a "pro" too? Forget about the time right now, start worrying if they're still running 4:00 miles in June/July, not 7 months before the Oylmpics in one of the first races of the season for these guys.
Webb doe, he didn't run very fast. Sub-par definitely, but hopefully he'll start shaping up within the next few months, like everyone said, he did do that last year!

you sound tough! And you're so right...no runners want to talk to letsrun b/c there are so many other running sites that people check daily. btw, everyone knows webb is a hot head. It's not a big deal for letsrun to report that he got pissed.

Haha the hilarity of this post astounds me! Who gives a damn about how hard it is for a "pro of his stature." He showed up thinking he was hot shit and was going to clean up. Why else would he go? And guess what, he got his comeupance, he got his ass handed to him. Even if he didnt fall, there was no way he was going to get the lead back. Haha just mixin it up with the boys again I suppose!
