Also all you who are saying "IQ is meaningless, it changes over time, etc." are just wrong. Read up on it. It is a huge predictor of educational attainment, income, career potential, criminality, marital success, and so on. In fact, in most areas it has a bigger impact than socioeconomic status. It's better to be smart and dirt poor than it is to be dumb and filthy rich. America really is a meritocracy, in that the most intelligent people rise to the top with relative ease—the unfortunate part (for social mobility at least) is that intelligence is highly heritable. So the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. Not by virtue of the economic system, but by virtue of the stratification of intellectual classes in America today.

Finally the guy claiming that everyone in his family had an IQ of 140-160 is laughable. 160 is FOUR standard deviations above the mean. That's one in 33,000 people—less than 10,000 exist in the entire united states! And although IQ is highly heritable, regression towards the mean virtually guarantees that, even if two 160-IQ people had children, their kids would not be in the 140-160 range.

I love LetsRun. Everyone runs 100mpw, has a 14:00 5k PR, and is a blue collar worker making $100,000 a year. Now I find out they all have an IQ of 150 too.

I acknowledge regression toward the mean, but to say "virtually guarantees" is to make an inaccurate overstatement of its effect--"read up on it." Didn't happen in my wife's family, or mine, or ours.

The person who spoke about a whole high-IQ family was describing a situation that, to my mind, is quite rare but entirely possible.

Nobody cares how smart you are. It's results that matter.

The average plumber probably has a much lower IQ than you, but can do things that you can't. If you still need him, what good is your high IQ?

The way I see it, those who respond to blatant trolling efforts with gusto and pride aught not to belong in this discussion.

Your arrogance (and even dissonance) brings to light that there is much you have to learn before you will ever become a successful or noteworthy doctor. Medicine is entirely about bettering the lives of those around us through focused and disciplined applications of our personal skills. It is NOT, however, a d*ck-slanging contest for egotistical, rich trust-fund babies believing that it is their "destiny" to make it as a doctor because society told them so. You may not fall under that category, but if it looks like feces and smells like feces...well you get the point.

In regards to the OP's question, I find that it is not so difficult to deal with the shortcomings of others who are not as fortunate as I have been. Everyone has dumb moments, everyone makes mistakes. What is difficult (and what requires both genius and class) is to accept one's own shortcomings and display resiliency and poise in the face of adversity, especially when surrounded by those who are not as intelligent. There is nothing more painful for a "smart" person than failing while amongst those who we may (perhaps wrongly) consider "lesser" or "dumb".

Lastly, I find that another major obstacle is stereotyping. As wrong as it may sound, I discover myself never giving some people a chance at achieving greatness, often due to one sentence they uttered, one action, or one facet of their personality. Fortunately, however, this often results in me being pleasantly surprised when this person does something great. These moments are often the most satisfying in life, and are what make me feel most human and most alive. I feel that there is very little difficulty in having other people live within my life. The hardest part, sadly, is finding a way to appropriately live within theirs.

I'm an engineer. Pretty good one I think, and well educated (bachelor's degree, masters and doctorate). I will agree that working (even at a fairly high level) in engineering, while intellectually stimuating and challenging (and beyond the ability of many letsrunners, no doubt... :-)), is NOT as intellectually demanding as theoretical physics or higher mathematics. At least to me, personally anyway. I struggle like heck to follow complex arguments in theoretical physics and pure math.

Engineering is more demanding than medicine, but is a distant third to physics and mathematics. Why do engineers don't study physics? because they are not capable.

Application is nice but a practical aspect, not intellectually hard. Pick up a book on string theory and you

will understand what I mean.

I'm a physics guy and it had nothing to do with my success or non success in mathematics. I just found the physics material to be far more interesting than what I perceived to be "doing math all day". There's no need to dimension the three fields like that. It's insulting.

You're right.

Engineers study engineering because they want to build things, are interested in real world application or design or whatever. Why would we study physics if we're not interested in the career path? Just because it's hard, and therefore gives us an opportunity to brag at cocktail parties? Stupid argument.

Science is getting to the point where that can scan the brain to determine your actual brain power, IQ tests only interpret people who can apply reason to an adequate degree of logic. some of the most brilliant people in the world are complete logicians and would come across as complete idiots in a social setting.
