Does anyone else think that this leans more to the "how could we have possibly let it get this far" end of sad than actually being a show of defiance? The fact that an Olympian and a guy ranked 6th in the world in his particular event is selling ad space on himself to earn a justifiable income (relative to his inputs and talent) just screams wrong.

He's not exactly destitute. This is just so he can eat hippy-dippy organic food for the year. It's not like he's on food stamps.

so it is not a matter of him doing this - it is a matter of how he is going to spend the additional income he can potentialy earn? you must be for the republicans.

Symmonds is a defiant bad boy with a sense of humor. He's a smart guy and understands a lot about power, corporate use of athletics and the press. Part entrepreneur, part performance artist, as well as a fine 800 man.

Nah, if I was for the Democrats, I'd be saying he should give it to other, more needy athletes. If I was for the Republicans, I'd say he earned it. Nick Symmonds is a douche anyway. You know how much he wants? More. Commend him if you will, but despite his professed altruism, he's self-seeking. And because he professes concern for the everyman "B" elite, it's is both disingenuous and distasteful.
