Cheserek and Futsum's last 800 meters

OK, thanks Johndc for doing the homework. That last straight sounds a little bit too fast or too short (25.6 per 200 pace -- faster than winning finishes in the NCAA 1500m) but otherwise sounds right on.

To add to Johndc, they had to run up the steep hill right after the 2.5 mile mark. Even though they looked like they picked up the effort, the pace would have slowed some. Even if they slowed to a 5:20 pace, that .1 mile would have taken them 10 seconds more than the last .1 where they were kicking. If you subtract the 22 and 32 seconds of the first and last .1 within the last .6 of the race, that leaves 108 seconds for the middle .4. Add that to the last 22 seconds and they ran 2:10 last half.

If you got ridiculous and said they slowed to 6:00 pace on that hill, the last half mile would still be no faster than 2:06.

As far as the rest of the splits Cheserek was a couple seconds back at the mile in 4:50. They didn't show the 2 mile mark on the video but from the 1/2 mile / 2 mile mark, it took them about 8 seconds to make that first left turn. Cheserek made that left turn at 9:52 the second time around so his 2 mile split would have been around 9:44.

Yah, I could be a off a little on the 3 mile mark, that was the hardest split to gsee accurately, but I am not off more than about 1-2 seconds, watch the video. They went no slower than 23.5 for last 172 meters. It appears that those young men were absolutely flying at the very end, but no way did they run a 1:54 for last 800m. No way.

My wild guess is about 2:09.5 final 200s prolly looked somethin' like this 37 (starts with an uphill, then flat), 34 (starts flat then sharp down) , 32 (downhill contiues, then flat) , 26.5 (kicking hard on flat and mostly straight to finish)

On rewatching the video, the 7:19 is a nonsense number. It is neither the halfway time nor the 1.5 mile mark.

If you freeze the video as the leader passes the clock set up at the 3 mile marker (1.5 the first time around) it reads 7:13. The halfway time would have been about another 14-15 seconds or 7:27-28.

On the second time around, the camera angle doesn't shown the clock at the 3 mile marker (or the marker itself). However, you can see the flag line attached to the marker and see where they hit that spot on the second lap.

The video time is 14:27. Adjusting the two seconds for the race time they came by 3 miles in 14:25, 14:26 at most.

That's still makes for fast last segment to 3.107 but not 22 or 23, that's way too fast.

Did anyone wheel the course? Were the markers in the correct places? The announcer did a decent job calling the race but made a lot of comments like about 400m and about 800m in the course preview. He also seemed to be estimating the splits based on the views he was getting from watching the webcast.

I guess the reported splits for this race were totally botched. I know Reina was 4:38 for the mile. But I don't know the 2 mile split. I would imagine it was pretty fast, probably at least 9:35.

This talk of 9:50 for Cheserek doesn't make sense. It was definitely faster. Then they picked it up and backed off again until the last 800.

3rd place was nearly 30 seconds behind. I can't believe the rest of the best runners in the country could get dropped that far back going through 2 miles 9:50.

Even regional high school meets have a well marked mile and 2 mile marked point.
