I don't think your strange group is very representative. To counter your example, out of my class 3 guys are working in Finance in NYC, 3 guys are engineers in various fields, one guy's a programmer in California, one guy started his own company, and one guy is an unemployed bum living with his parents.
400 meter runners are definitely the hottest and most desirable for dating. im biased there of course. but as for distance runners, the majority are definitely introverted/nerdy types but thats not to say every single one is. And inter-team dating def happened at my high school. People tend to show more interest for those who hold the same interests as them, especially one thats almost a life-style such as distance running.
