8:00 pace is just fine for my runners. If they're going too slow on their steady (easy) days it's not a big deal. Those two things are not similar at all.
Toughness is important, but mental toughness is more important than upper body strength toughness. The push ups arent about them getting big pectoral muscles.
By the way, my girls team won their meet today. Boys finished midpack bc two of the top five were missing.
