There are way more than 100 people in the US running 100 mpw. There are probably 5 or more guys on every D1 team ranked in the top 25 running 100 miles a week. That is already 125. Throw in the better guys on some of the not so good teams and you are probably up to 200 or so college guys at least. Add in all the professionals (though less of them probably ran 100 last week as their season is winding down), the elite high schoolers, and a few professional and maybe even collegiate women. There were probably easily 250-300 people in the US who ran 100 miles last week. I was one of them and I personaly know about ten others. Sure it's hard, but it's really not that remarkable.

A large number of people on this site lie about their mileage. The average here seems to be about 100 miles per week. Also, an significant percentage of those on other running websites, where are they log their miles, are lying.

Given that, and the fact that I actually ran over 100 miles per week in high school, you might be right for expecting a low number.

However, you need to consider the number of people running and training for marathons. . . maybe 200,000? What percentage of those people are getting close to 100 mile per week without trying? (My 74 year old grandfather still runs his 8 mile loop every day.)

This is what you get for starting a thread on letsrun about this.

First off, congrats on the 100miles... that kind of mileage is serious training assuming you are consistant and stay healthy it will surely pay dividends.

Now to answer your question:

A decent amount of NCAA runners are running 100 mile weeks right now. As mentioned before there are probably atleast a few on every halfway decent team. I'm sure there are some teams with 10 or more. That said most runners in the NCAA are not running that much but my rough guess is that 600-700 D1 runners and 300 or so D2/3/naia/jc guys running that type of volume so we'll say 1000. I would be that 200-300 of these guys ran exactly 100 though so you would have them beat.

There are probably 500-1000 other Americans that are training for fall road races/marathons that are also up above (some way above) 100 miles a week.

While there are definitely a ton of Africans running a lot on a daily basis, Letsrun loves to grossly overestimate the volume of Africans that are world class. Also most of the Africans that do track are running their last races very soon and probably aren't running over 100 miles this week. I would guess that 1000-1500 Kenyans and 1000-1500 other Africans are running this much.

Europeans for the most part suck at distance running but there are a lot of them so I'd guess that 1000 to 2000 people are running this much accross Europe.

Japanese people run a lot and the Ekiden season is coming up quickly. I'd guess 1000 Japanese are pounding the pavement at this level.

I'd add another 1000-2000from the rest of the world.

I doubt the total is over 10,000 people.

I run 100km hard and 15 easy for warm-up and cool-down. I bet my PR's are much better that u joggers who run 100miles just for the number....

I'm a hobby jogger and I did 101 last week.

There are about 250 college teams at D1, D2 and D3 with at least semi competitive programs. Count one runner at each school. 250 (school is in session, fewer miles)

Count one recent grad for each school: 250

Count two high schoolers per state (school is in session, fewer miles): 100

Count five older runners, not recent grads, per state: 250

Add the people who trained with the college runners above, eliminating solo runners for the extra miles 150.

That's 1000 in the US. Add 4000 worldwide, mostly Kenya and Ethiopia, but some Canada, England, Japan.

That's 5000. Even if I'm off by a lot on each, double it and it's 10,000. Now, in the summer, I think the U.S. number is considerably higher, perhaps 15,000 instead of 5,000. Lower the number to 80 miles per week and the number is likely around 100,000 people worldwide.

My best guess, last week 10,000 people, or less, ran at least 100 miles in the week.

Ha,ha! Horrible coach puts out more NCAA D 1 kids than any other I know. Last top d1 kid was all american in indoor track and cc as a frosh and went on to be a real stud. He has been coaching for 40 years and still wins state titles and many of his former runners are coaching all over the nation. 100 mile weeks at certain times is great, even for high school kids who have been running since 5th and 6t grade so they could be on a state title team when they grow up!

I know almost 500 people (number of facebook friends I have). Out of those, 4 people ran 102 or more mile last week. That comes out to .008 (or .8%). The population of the world is 6.94 billion. To figure out how many ran 102 or more miles last week, you simply multiply 6.94 billion by .008. It comes out to 55.5 million.

I thought I saw a lot of runners out this week.
