Have you seen Cross-Fit workouts?
It's basically a bunch of ants scurring around while some hardcore shirtless guy with a goatee and tribal yells out encouragement and to "work through the pain!" in a warehouse because that's the anti-gym and "hardcore".
Coaching in CF is basically 'Go Faster'!
CF is organized chaos, teaching inproper form and soreness and discomfort for the sake of itself.
CF and CF gyms succeed because it is in stark contrast to the Big Box Gym. They succeed because every trainer wants his own gym and CF gyms are relatively easy to attain. If you want a genuine gym experience I'd suggest a local neighborhood gym if you have one in your area.
Costs:
$1000 for CF level 1
$1000 to promote your gym as a CF gym
$1000-$1500 for equipment (if you are a handyman you could make your own power rack....this will tie in with the whole "home gym" experience)
You don't need a big space because you can take your workouts outside and many CFers do. The majority of CF gyms in the beginning were basically garages. You can probably find a relatively cheap 1000-2000sq ft space. Compare this to a big box gym which runs around 50-70k sq ft.
