Davila not going?

Kara earned a spot on the team. If she thinks she can be ready, why should she give that up? To race at worlds or the olympics you have to make the team at the trials (barring unusual circumstances). Kara made the team. I don't even know why this is debatable.

So you are guaranteeing that all three of those athletes are a lock for the team? No need to be cautious about injury or race preparation?

It almost never works out that the three favorites at the marathon trials make the team. Not saying that those three won't prepare intelligently, but it's silly to act like they've got it locked up.

You seem reluctant to be surprised. You may have heard of Jenny Spangler and Christine Clark. Women marathoners shoot from obscurity to the top of the American heap with far more regularity than men do.

Hastings' 2:27:03 on the L.A. course would have been close to 2:22 or 2:23 during Hurricane Boston this year, and if she's like most runners she'll improve in her next marathon without changing a thing. The ballsy Davila is also unquestionably still on the rise, but hasn't separated herself from the other elites to the extent her Boston performance suggests on paper. Moody is a "pure marathoner" who ran 2:30:53 on a warm day last fall, so I wouldn't dismiss her chances either.

It's not the case that one of more of your "big three" would have to have an off-day in order for anyone else to grab an Olympic spot; they could run decent races and still finish fourth or fifth if Moody, Hastings, Lewy-Boulet or one or two others makes a small performance jump. Magda will have to run a cagier race than she did in 2004 to make the team, but she almost certainly will do so.

Davila is a lock. She has improved her 5k and 10k and was a better marathoner than the bunch when she was 15:30 and 32:00. She is probably the next sub 2:20 marathoner.

Goucher is a consistent 2:25 but 2 minutes behind Davila. She is also making poor choices right now running WC all dinged up.

Flanagan will probably choose to run on the track.

Lewy-Boulet is on a roll and has improved for both 5k and 10k and knows how to be ready at the right time.

Hastings= LA was also aided this year. Will run with the front group for the first 22 before fading out of the top 10. First time success is usually a curse. Just ask Brett Gotcher.

Moody will not be in the last mile when the team is decided. Although she finished 4th last time around, she was never a factor. Running from behind will not be successful with this great field

Since when have there been plans to change the marathon distance to 41 kilometers?

Luckily these things are not decided on the message boards. If they were, Kara would of won Boston and finished 2 minutes ahead of Desi instead of 2 minutes behind her.

1. Davila is not likely to break 2:20. She's still great, but that's a hell of a fast time. She's definitely still a favorite to make the team.

2. In what world is Goucher a consistent 2:25 runner? Why don't you go back and add up the number of 2:25 marathons she's run in non-aided conditions and get back to me.

3. Flanagan has definitely stated she's running the marathon trials.

5. Hastings may or may not be at the front, but I just find it amusing that you use this reasoning on Hastings but not on Flanagan, who is running her 2nd marathon after finding "first time success", or Goucher, whose best marathon race is still her debut.

6. She was 5th. And whether running from behind will be successful or not will depend largely on the pace. Given the slow pace these races usually go out in, I doubt anyone will be out of contention early, and therefore "running from behind" late.

Wow watching Kara being lapped with two to go by Sally K (NCAA Champ) and the rest of the Kenyans....32:30 is far outside her best. Was it worth it?

To place top 7 she needed to run sub 31:28....to be competitive sub 31:00 and negative spit close to 15:00 flat.

Your logic is stupid. Americans finished 7th, 9th and 13th. It doesn't matter who goes or doesn't go. We are non-competitive. None of the women were ever in the race. Goucher or Davilla didn't matter a lick.

Desi has only a limited time to cash in on being the Boston runner up. She can't fit in another marathon without jeopardising her performance in the trials, even though she would be offered very good appearance money to do so. She can however run a good half marathon or two and the track work she has done over the summer will help her run some good times at that distance.

I'm sure Daegu was never in the plan. People here are very selfish wanting her to run at Daegu when her focus should be preparing for the trials and earning a living from road races.

then why did davila run the 10km trials or europe track this summer? she could of hit the road circuit, worked on her speed, and made some money instead of the "expense of heading to europe"? your logic doesn't make sense and makes as much sense as an unprepared Goucher running the 10km with a stress reaction.

Goucher made the team. Davilla did not. Des ran track because it will pay off huge in January, which is her focus.

Goucher herself said she had plenty of time before Boston and went on and on about it. Now suddenly she "only" had a few months?

Her debut was it. Every marathon since has been excuse after excuse after excuse.

I have said it repeatedly, Desi, Shalane, and ?, those are the top 3 for the marathon trials and I said it before Desi's Boston effort. Desi is still rising and Kara has plateaued to a certain point.

Kara was talking about medaling in London? Say what? She will have a tough time making the team let alone a medal. I predict she won't and then will really attempt to cash in as 16' will be too late for her.

Anything can happen as we all know, but with Shalane's speed and Desi's strength/speed, those 2 are unlikely to not be in the top 3.

All of the Goucher lovers on this site say the same thing, but you can't say that she's new to the marathon anymore.

She got beat in Boston and then said she should have went faster when the pace was slower. Hogwash! Hindsight is 20/20. She only went to the front for the limelight. She got more than out kicked by 2 other runners, she was beaten by a hard sustained pace, not a sprint.

With all of the runners from throughout the entire world who will be at London, Kara, IF she makes it, will be lucky with a top 10 finish on her best day with others not having such a good day. Look at the current best times and please tell me how she is going to medal? What is she doing so different to suddenly be capable of so much more?

Desi is still improving, Kara has flattened out and IS overrated. Please don't get me started on her weak bronze in 07' as Beijing one year later proved me right.

Trust me, I will be on this site the day of the trials and all of the Kara lovers will go into hiding. She's no shoe in to make the team and with all the others that I haven't mentioned, she will have a tough, tough day.

That is bullcrap, period. Because she had a baby? Do your history mate and you will figure out that you don't know what you are talking about.

My point is that it really doesn't matter. We are not competitive in the 5 or the 10. We may be more competitive in the marathon, but not by much. Our marathon team in London will likely be Davilla, Flanagan and Goucher. It could be slightly different. Maybe a Hastings or a Moody. Then whoever doesn't make it, moves to the 10. It doesn't matter. We have an outside shot at a medal in the marathon, a slim shot in the 10 and no shot in the 5. That's that regardless of the name of the runner.

Pretty clear now that it was selfish for an injured Goucher to have raced in Daegu.
