Most impressive World Record

Kevin Young at the Olympics 400 hurdles. I think it was something like 46 or 47. I will like to think that it was Daniel Komens 3000 meters but it has been Young, that record is practically untouchable. I have a video of that run and it just amazing the way he ran that day.

No, Kobayashi broke Chestnut's record a few weeks ago.

How about Wilson Kipketer's indoor 800:

February 1997 800 m Paris, France 1:42.67 (i)

No one ever even comes close to this, and the next best time is about 1.5 seconds slower.

I think you're making a couple mistakes here:

1. 19.19 is far better than 9.58. When MJ ran 19:32 I was shocked and thought that this record would stand as long as I live, it was just so much "out of this world". And then Bolt came along and ridiculed it. 9:58 is also insane but Gay isn't that far away. ~ 1%

2. Most people here fail to realize how great Paulas Marathon WR is. You look at the 2nd best all time performance for those three events and compare to the WR - differences are:

100m (Bolt/Gay): 1.15%

200m (Bolt/Johnson): 0.68%

Marathon (Radcliffe/Ndereba): 2.50%

If we compare to top 2-5 performances, 100 and 200m will trade their place I think but Paulas Marathon will still be OFF THE CHARTS.

Check out the other girls closest to the record they are a lot slower than Paula over 10,000m

Just like on the mens side once you get some Kenyan or Ethiopian who has gone sub 30 on the track and concentrating on the marathon the record will go

It's difficult to compare the marathon with the track events. Aside from the weather, altitude and time of year, the track events have a "level playing field". Many marathons are contested for the win and have absolutely no chance of breaking the record. I definitely respect Paula's marathon record, but it cannot be said that it is as commonly contested as other events with less variables. How many marathons are there that have a legitimate chance of breaking the record. I'm sure this was already mentioned and discussed on the Boston wind aided thread.

Koman would have to been really dying not to be able to run 219m in 38s. I would still vote for 12:37 being slightly better.

I think it's the 3000m as well. Kenenisa, El G, no one has gotten close.

Bekele's 26:17 looks pretty good. When Farah won at Pre earlier this year it was the fastest time in 4+ years and he was nearly 30 seconds behind the record.

A lot of talented distance men are going straight to the marathon instead of running the 10k on the track.

The original question was for the most "impressive" WR.

To me, to be really "impressive" when performed, there has to be tremendous excitement or amplitude.

Distance races are out, they are slow and take too long.

For my money, the most "impressive" are probably the PV and JAV.

Maybe the best of all is JAV, the thing is flying 100m! A good JAV toss always is impressive, the flighting, the impact of the spear, the sheer distance covered, sometimes quivering in the air, there is power, suspense, wonderment, it is maybe the best spectator event, and sometimes a ref gets hit.

My vote is for JAV!

They are all pretty nuts, but have you ever raised the high jump standards up to 8' just to contemplate jumping over?

All of the jumps are up there though (except women's PV since that is the only record that I have actually exceeded).

As a matter of fact I have! It is truly unbelievable. But the jav record is bigger, more impressive. Hammer is maybe second--have you seen the video of the WR hammer throw?

Have you ever thrown hammer, or just fooled around with one? I played around with one a few years back, at around 187 lbs I was warned not to do more than 3 turns. I got into it, and went past 3 turns.

The 4th turn was completed with me horizontally in the air, when I made my second mistake--I let go of the hammer.

F'd up my left rotator cuff on my landing, along with lots of bruises...lay there while a bunch of big guys laughed at me.
