Ngugi didn't lead from the start. He and the rest of the field jogged for the first 1000m and then he ran hard for 800m. It was brilliant running but it is a different tactic than taking out hard from the start.Running hard from the gun makes everyone else's tactics easy. The race strings out and people can run. Putting a hard move in the middle is much harder to deal. Some people respond to the move. Others don't and you can get a bit of traffic jam

I know this was a HS Race, but Amy Weissenbach's win this year at the CA State Meet in the 800m at 2:02.04 was sick, and she led wire to wire.

I was lucky to be able to witness the 1987 world championships when Kenyan Paul Kipkoech had the incredible courage to run from the front and win the 10,000 m gold medal. He may not have led from the gun but I do recall him taking off after about 1,600m and hammering a 4:14 for the next 1,600. The Africans were not as dominant at that time and championship racers were primarly won by kickers such as Alberto Cova from Italy who won both the '83 WC and the '84 Olympic gold medals.

The video is apparently not on youtube anymore, but here is the 3000m that came first, and probably decided the way she ran the 1500m. This 1500m was one of the all time great races.

He could have maybe even won the fast heat if he tryed so why would he just beat a bunch of 210 800m guys when he could have won the whole meat? But it was kind of cool to run against some body so fast since 235 for the 1,000m is almost 2 flat pace for the 800m and noone on my team can even run that fast for 800m so even though he beat me it was cool just to be on the track with someone so fats.
But anyway thats my example of some one winning a race by leading from the start

Thinking of recent championship-level races, Bungei's Olympic win in '08 and Malaudzi's WC win the next year are both good examples of veteran runners finally winning the big one by going wire-to-wire in the 800. I was particularly impressed how Bungei was able to negative split, running a sub-52 last lap, while staying in front the whole time.

The Tom Byers race is funny. The field was so stacked that nobody took him seriously, out front. By the time they figured out that he might actually run away, he was too far away and tying up.....

Not to be a kill job but Pete Pfitzinger wasn't even in the lead pack for the first half of the '84 trials, and took the lead at 14 miles. A long way from home but not leading all the way.

My vote is for Ngugi in '88, or Radcliffe's 30:0's run at the european champs.

No, Keino's countryman Ben Jipcho set a fast early pace to help Keino beat Ryun in the high altitude (which Ryun claims Jipcho later apologized to him for, as one is not supposed to run as a team in the Olympics)

Juantorena in the 1976 800 pretty much led from the gun (maybe did not hold the lead for just a few yards early on).

Byers was the rabbit and supposed to drop out. The others knew this. Also, according to those in the race, the split-timer was reading the pack Byer's splits leading them to possibly believe that he was running insane splits. I say possibly because I like to think runners of that caliber can read pace better than that. I heard that Byers was blacklisted as a rabbit and had trouble getting in races for awhile for failing to drop out as instructed.
