Point 1. You do realize male distance runners are famously misogynist right? Mostly because girls do not find them attractive due to their scrawny build and haunted expressions (and they exude reticence and leave-me-alone).

Point 2. Why are you posting this on LR? My assumption is that subconciously (or not) you really do want to get married.

Can't tell you how many women 20-40 somethings I've known that start out pretending to question marriage, then either give-in or reveal later that they just never found Mr. Right i.e. they were lying before.

I'm one of those runner types, always wanted marriage and kids, and loved the whole thing - its what I live for.

You're probably right, I'm not going to argue with you because I have a feeling that you are speaking from experience. I do know that advice I could give myself 10 years ago compared to what has actually happened is laughably different.

Here's a question for everybody that I have had. Do you really think that anybody, man or woman, truly does not want to get married? Or, is it not a genuine thought and they just think or say they don't, even though deep deep deep down, they really do? Do we all deep down want to?

I just wonder what the fascination has been with marriage. I can see some good points, where one lady on here was in a long term relationship and very happy and not married, just going with it. Does the actual marriage part of it "set it in stone" or each person is "claimed" and can't be taken? What is it? Thanks, interesting non-running-related topic!

The reason is this thing called a wedding. Many women have been dreaming of this day since they were little girls.

Honest question - Was your post supposed to be funny?

Honest answer- Sometimes people get too involved thinking about whether things are right or wrong, good or bad. I have no idea if getting married or not is any (or all) of those combinations.

There are flecks of seriousness (see the last line) and flecks of bs. I wouldn't say I was trying to be funny. I would say I was trying to make fun of any number of things. I am going to say don't take it too seriously, any of 'it' for that matter.

I don't understand why a couple of people are flaming you. I don't see ANYTHING wrong with what you said. I think it's great that you are 26 and don't feel pressured to get married. It's nothing to strive for, but rather something to do IF you want to and IF the right guy comes along. If not, I believe you can be perfectly happy without getting married.

You know, how actually cool people are the ones that aren't trying to be cool or talking about it but just, are?

Similarly, one who really doesn't care to be married doesn't spend so much energy trying to justify why it's ok for them not to get married. But in this thread, we have several women who sound like - to paraphrase what victor lazlo tells Rick in Casablana - they are trying to convince themselves of something they don't believe in their hearts.

Getting married shouldn't limit your ability to travel, etc.

Having children does, but some married couples choose not to have kids right away or ever.

Also, judging all males based on the comments you see on an anonymous message board doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I'm 29. Marriage has never preoccupied my thoughts. I've spent many years in relationships, and many years single. With all of the experience I've had now, I can't honestly say one way is "better" than the other.

And before anyone says "well you just haven't met the right person," I'm going to say that's largely irrelevant.

If you are a complete, well-rounded person, you can live in total happiness, regardless of your relationship status.

Bottom line: There are perks to being single, the biggest one being you can do WTF you want, whenever you want. Being single is by far the less complicated option. It's also the less stressful one.

And there are perks to being in a relationship, the obvious one being you get to spend quality time with a person you love, which is awesome. But it requires compromise, and sacrifice, and constantly thinking about the well-being of another human. These things take time and effort.

I feel the same way today about marriage as I always have: If it happens with a cool, intelligent individual, that's great. If not, I'll be no worse off, and in some ways I'll be better off.
