I was assuming that there was no clock avaliable for the OP's kid. For us, only half of our dual meets have clocks to see, so without it its just a shot in the dark.
And if you are trying to run a fast time to qualify for a conference meet or something then it is unfair if you can't tell what time youre at, but the teams at the dual meet o nthe other side of town can see their time.
Thanks to everybody for this helpful discussion.
My own view is that context should count for something in all this. As I said, my son is 14 years old. This is his first season running -- he did not participate in cross country or indoor track. The meet was technically a league championship although there are only six small schools in the league, it's not a very competitive league and didn't feel like a championship of any sort to me. My son did not qualify for an individual event. He was entered in the 2-mile relay. There were a total of three teams in the relay. When my son got the baton he was in 3rd place. 1st place was literally 300+ meters ahead of him. Second place was about 200 meters ahead. There was no one else on the track but those three runners. My son's goal was to break 2:40 for the 800 meters. There was no time clock visible. There was no one reading elapsed times. There was hardly anyone else even paying attention. I yelled out "78-79!" as my son went by. I was told I'm not allowed to do that.
Something about that didn't sit right with me. I went home and wrote into Letsun about it. I guess I was a little ticked off at the time. I see that a lot of people have a lot of strong opinions on this as on everything else on Letsrun.
I guess I still feel that my 14-year old son who has almost no experience in the sport and is running on a track almost completely by himself ought to be able to get a split from his Dad during the race. But I know how to do it for the future. Next time I will say "2 seconds ahead" and everything will be cool.
