Yes, great job Pete (and Reality Bath, after your cow analogy from a few weeks back, you win post of the decade in my opinion).
I read Pete's interview on Master Running site and he is so dead on...about training and racing. I ran a 5,000 on the track last year and could not believe the way the younger runners race (us masters). the make it much harder to run your own race = meaning if Pete and other top Masters could just run incognito (without being singled out as masters runners) the times would be even faster - he had to go out faster than he wanted to get away from all the comotion...
because the young guys (who will end up :30 seconds behind you at the finish line) will surge past you multiple times thoughout the middle of the race only to slow down and be passed back...this takes some energy and focus away from your racing.
i ran a mile on the track several Summers ago where everytime i caught a younger runner they would literally drop out of the race...that really breaks your momentum.
So i just add this in as another factor to consider when evaluting these masters times. (This acutally is the same thing that happen to some of the top Women when they road race.) Messages to younger runners: just run your own race...getting beat by someone of Pete's calibre is not a bad thing. You might even be able to learn from him by following his lead (ability to hit the right pace, racing style, etc.) It is easier to run with him (go with the flow) than run against him.
