He is world class , if he cannot go out on a fast track and run sub four he is in trouble. Any elite at his level could do it.

You'll pay for your fernandez bashing. The guy is finally healthy and if he can keep 100% healthy he should be good for some pr's this summer. This kid ran a 3:55.02 solo indoors at a younger age than webb was when he ran 3:53 outdoors.

As for solinsky, nice work man. 3:54-26:59 range is quite impressive. If he stays 100% healthy until august, he should have a great shot at a medal at WC's. He should be good for 26:40's at 10k too.

Outdoors, with plenty of sharpening races under his belt. Solinsky would run 3:50 under the same circumstances. Which is one reason why Chris is 27 seconds faster in the 5K and 47 seconds faster in the 10K.

Pre was a good miler (WR was only 3:50), but times move along.

He will have to run sub four in the final at worlds. This should be a breeze for him at this level.

I agree he does have a legit shot at a medal. I wonder how many 10k's he will run this year prior to Korea ? ( USTAF and ?? )

OMG!!!! You are driving me crazy. He didn't just go out and run "sub four" as you put it. He's way under four, and he did it in his first race of the year, in what I believe he said is a PR. NOBODY WHO TRAINS AT A HIGH LEVEL PR'S THE FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON. GET THE POINT.

Solinsky ran 3:55.76 in this same meet last year so I don't think this is THAT surprising of an effort. More of a validation that he's progressing.

Before WOW!!! completely goes off the deep end, I just want to repeat the point above, made by an earlier poster. Last year, Solinsky won this meet -- in January, no less -- in 3:55. So yes, 3:54 is a great opener, but it's simply not that surprising if you've been paying attention. It means training is going well and he's on track, but it doesn't in any way change expectations for what he'll be hoping for this year.

What it means--potentially--is a couple or a few seconds faster in a 5000, and that could mean the difference between a medal and not getting one.

Also, it is NOT just based on strength workouts. Chris said in the interview after the race that he had been doing not less than 120 mile weeks prior to race week, but ALSO that they had been doing 1 speed workout for every 4 strength workouts. I take to be part of Jerry's "secrets."

YAWN!!! I knew a little ethiopian guy went 3:31 indoors for the 1500m and his season opener too. He was a 5k/10k guy as well. Great start but people need to stop jerkin off about this. Other athletes have and are capable of doing better.

Remember everybody this is the guy who closed in 4:00 his last 1600 in the ncaa 5k to win it (2007 i believe?)

So technically this shouldn't have been a surprise.

Since you opened this up, let's take a look: Geb was in a well-rabbited race, and chasing El G very step of the way in front of a roaring Euro-crowd. That's worth two full seconds, MINIMUM. Chris ran the equivalent of 3:36, leading most of the race in a not-as-inspiring competitive situation. Deducting two seconds gives a 3:34 under similar conditions.

Extrapolating to the 5K, that's a generous (to Geb) ten-second advantage...on 12:37. I'll leave it to the genii to figure out where that puts Chris this summer.

While 3:54 is very good, it is not unexpected. I would have been disappointed if he ran slower then last year, and he ran about the same... a little faster. If anything LAST YEAR'S 3:55 was the one that should have been the shock... not this year's 3:54!

Mottram was a 3:49 guy... Sydney Maree was a sub 3:50 guy... lots of 5k guys are sub 3:50 or around 3:50 milers... which makes Chris' 3:54 indoors sound about right.

I think what nearly everyone fails to realize is that because there are not enough high quality 10ks throughout the year to get a good sense of how fast is really fast, the 10k is a weak event in terms of depth of performances. 26:59 sounds more ridiculous then it is. I guarantee that if there were 4 high quality European 10ks during the season, and you had the common named 12:50-13:05 guys race each one, you would see a lot more 26:40-26:59 times then we do otherwise.

What I mean by this, though Chris' 10k seems unreal, and makes one wonder if he is a 10k guy, I contend his best event is still the 5k in terms of absolute performance. Solinsky is a 3k/5k guy, and to that end, should be a 3:50 miler outdoors. This makes his 3:54 seem completely inline with where he should be.
